Lionel Richie Says Daughter Sofia Is Going to Be a ‘Fantastic’ Mom: ‘I’m Pumped’ (Exclusive)

Lionel Richie is “pumped up” to become a grandfather again!

The singer, 74, shared his excitement to welcome another grandchild as he discussed what daughter Sofia Richie Grainge will be like as a new mum. The biggest night in pop premiere in Los Angeles.

“You know what? I’m pumped,” Lionel told PEOPLE at the premiere of the Netflix documentary on Monday. “Now I’m going to spoil another child in the world… And I’m not really sure what the child will do to me, but I hope the child gives the parents a little run, because every parent wants to avenge what you did to me,” he jokes.

Sofia (25) and husband Elliot Grainge (30) confirmed that they are expecting their first child in an interview with Vogue last week. The announcement came after the couple tied the knot in April last year.

Lionel (74) can’t wait to “spoil” his grandchild while talking about his daughter Sofia’s pregnancy.

Speaking about the parenting advice he can give his daughter, Lionel jokes: “So the new baby comes, ‘Oh my God, Dad, what do I do now?’ Ah ha! All parents love this position.”

“Right now I’m in a position where I’m going to love this child to death, spoil him to death,” American Idol continues the judge. “And on very special occasions, bring the child back so that the parents can raise that child.”

“She’s going to be amazing,” Lionel tells PEOPLE of his daughter becoming a mom. “These are two loving parents and I don’t think they know what awaits them because every child is different. So no matter what advice you give them, there is no manual for it. They will figure it out.”

Lionel is already a grandfather to eldest daughter Nicole Richie’s two children: daughter Harlow, 16, and son Sparrow Madden, 14, whom he shares with husband Joel Madden.

In their interview with Vogue, Sofia revealed the sweet way she revealed her pregnancy to dad Lionel. “We went to Elliot’s parents, who live about five minutes from us, and I think I had a box — I mean it was an Hermès box or some kind of box — and I told everyone I bought them a gift from Milan Fashion Week, ” said the future star.

“Everybody was like ‘Ooooh Hermes!’ But then they opened it and in it were all three pregnancy tests [in it]. That’s what we told all parents. Watching their reaction go from like ‘I’m about to get an expensive gift’ to like ‘I’m about to have a grandchild’ was really sweet.”
