News about Lisa Baird
In response to allegations that the previous coach engaged in sexual harassment and misconduct, Lisa Baird, commissioner of the Women’s National Soccer League, resigned after approximately 19 months in the role.
The league revealed Baird’s departure on Friday night, a day after the Athletic published allegations from two former players who accused North Carolina coach Paul Riley of misconduct, including sexual coercion.
Riley was fired by Courage on Thursday after the allegations sparked backlash from players that led to the cancellation of games this weekend.
FIFA also launched an investigation into the case on Friday. It is rare for soccer’s world governing body to find itself embroiled in a dispute involving one of its member associations. On Friday, US Soccer also announced the results of an impartial investigation. The NWSL was founded by US Soccer in 2013 and was supported by the organization until last year, when it became an independent league. The federation continues to provide financial support to the league.
“Everyone involved in this game has a responsibility to ensure the safety and respect of the players. That applies to all ages, competitions and skill levels, according to US Soccer President Cindy Cone. We owe it to every player, each fan and the entire football community to do everything possible to prevent something from happening.
After the Athletic revealed allegations of abuse by former NWSL players Sinead Farrelly and Mana Shim, US Soccer suspended Riley’s coaching license on Thursday.
FIFA told The Associated Press it was “deeply concerned” about the situation and will now ask US soccer officials for more information on the issues raised.
“We can confirm that the judicial authorities of FIFA are actively investigating the case and have opened a preliminary investigation,” FIFA said in a statement to the AP. “Due to the gravity and seriousness of the allegations made by the players, we can confirm that the judicial authorities of FIFA are actively investigating the matter and have opened a preliminary investigation.”
“As part of this, FIFA will be reaching out to relevant parties, including US Soccer and the NWSL, to learn more about the various protection concerns and allegations of abuse that have been raised,” it said in a statement.
When Farrelly was a player for the Philadelphia Independence in the now-defunct Women’s Professional Soccer League in 2011, the alleged harassment began.
While Farrelly was a member of the Portland Thorns, he told the website that the abuse continued. Shim, a previous Thorns player, was also allegedly the target of harassment. When Riley was fired, the Thorns said they investigated the allegations against him and forwarded those findings to the league.
According to Riley, the allegations are “completely false.” The league was stunned by the allegations, leading to the cancellation of this weekend’s games. The NWSL Players Association expressed its hope that the decision would be accepted and supported by the public.
