List of all Prime Ministers of India from 1947-2023
India has a parliamentary government, with the prime minister serving as both the head of the executive branch and the president. The Lok Sabha, the main legislative body of the Republic of India, is the lower house of the Indian Parliament, and the Prime Minister is usually the head of the party or coalition that holds the majority there. The Lok Sabha is the permanent body responsible for the Prime Minister.
The Prime Minister of India is elected by the President; however, to remain in office, the prime minister must have the support of a majority of the members of the Lok Sabha, who are directly elected every five years. The Senate, Rajya Sabha or Lok Sabha, can have a Prime Minister. The appointment and dismissal of members of the Community Council of Ministers as well as the assignment of positions in the Government are entirely under the competence of the Prime Minister.
