Railway Board Chairman: Jaya Varma Sinha has been appointed as the Chairman and CEO of the Railway Board. The first woman chairperson of the railway board, Sinha succeeds Anil Kumar Lahoti and will take charge in September.

Indian Railways is administratively managed by the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Indian Railways, who is overseen by the Minister of Railways, who is the representative of the Indian Parliament. The Chairman also acts as ex-officio Principal Secretary of the Ministry of Railways to the Government of India.

List of presidents of the railway administration (1951–present)

The Railway Board of India was established in 1922 and the Chief Railway Commissioner was its Chairman. They are fully accountable to the government for all technical judgments and policy advice.

The position of Chief Commissioner was abolished in April 1951, and a senior functional member was appointed Chairman of the Board in his place.

George Stephenson is popularly known as the ‘Father of Railways’.

Dr. Elattuvalapil Sreedharan is popularly known as the Railwayman.

The Indian Railway Board is among the five largest railway networks in the world.

It is also one of the largest employers with around 1.4 million employees.

The Railway Board has all the powers and authority to approve policies and projects relating to Indian Railways.

All the officers of the Railway Board today are members of the Indian Railway Staff Service – Class A Civil Service under the Union Public Service Commission.
