Liz Truss is a British Conservative politician and Cabinet Minister. She has been the Member of Parliament for South West Norfolk since 2010. Since 2019 she has served as the Secretary of State for International Trade and President of the Board of Trade. Truss was previously the Secretary of State for Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs from 2019–2020 and Lord Chancellor and Secretary of State for Justice from 2014–2015. 

In April 2021 she was appointed the Minister for Women and Equalities. Truss was born in Oxford, England in 1975. She studied Philosophy, Politics, and Economics at Oxford University and later attended the London School of Economics. She held several positions in government and civil service before entering Parliament. She has been a strong advocate for free trade and has frequently spoken out in favor of Britain’s future outside of the European Union.

Truss was born in 1975 in Oxford, England, and attended Roundhill Primary School, Oxford High School, and Merton College, Oxford, where she read philosophy, politics, and economics. She worked for Shell UK as an economist between 1996 and 1997 before becoming a senior advisor for the Conservative Party in 1998.  

In 2002, Truss was elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) for South West Norfolk and held several positions in the Shadow Cabinet between 2004 and 2010. In the 2010 general election, she increased her majority and became the Minister of State for Education and Childcare in the Department for Education.

During her time as Education Minister, Truss introduced a number of reforms, including free school meals for all pupils in Reception, Year 1, and Year 2 and the introduction of the English Baccalaureate. Liz Truss is married to Hugh O’Leary, a solicitor, whom she met at a party in 2001. They married in 2003 and have two children, a son, and a daughter. Truss and O’Leary live in Norwich and are active members of their local community.   

Truss has credited her husband as a “great support” who has enabled her to pursue her career while raising their children. O’Leary is a keen cyclist and has been involved in the local cycling campaign, campaigning for better cycling infrastructure. He also serves as a school governor in Norwich and is an active member of their local church.
