Liz Truss is a British Conservative politician and Cabinet Minister. She has been the Member of Parliament for South West Norfolk since 2010. Since 2019 she has served as the Secretary of State for International Trade and President of the Board of Trade. Truss was previously the Secretary of State for Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs from 2019–2020 and Lord Chancellor and Secretary of State for Justice from 2014–2015. 

In April 2021 she was appointed the Minister for Women and Equalities. Truss was born in Oxford, England in 1975. She studied Philosophy, Politics, and Economics at Oxford University and later attended the London School of Economics. She held several positions in government and civil service before entering Parliament. She has been a strong advocate for free trade and has frequently spoken out in favor of Britain’s future outside of the European Union.

Truss was elected as a Member of Parliament for South West Norfolk in 2010 and served as Secretary of State for International Trade and President of the Board of Trade from 2019 to 2020. She was the Minister of State for Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs from 2014 to 2016 Secretary of State for Justice, and Lord Chancellor from 2016 to 2019. Truss has also served as a government whip, Under-Secretary of State for Education and Employment, and Under-Secretary of State for Education, Skills, and Employment. 

She was made a member of the Privy Council of the United Kingdom in 2016. Truss is also a co-founder of the Free Enterprise Group and an advocate for economic reforms. She has written two books, titled Britannia Unchained: Global Lessons for Growth and Prosperity and After the Storm: A New Economic Strategy for the 2020s.

Biography of Liz Truss  

Liz Truss is a British politician and the current Secretary of State for International Trade. She has served in a number of senior government roles, such as Secretary of State for Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs, Chief Secretary to the Treasury, and Lord President of the Council.  

Truss was born in 1975 in Oxford, England, and attended Roundhill Primary School, Oxford High School, and Merton College, Oxford, where she read philosophy, politics, and economics. She worked for Shell UK as an economist between 1996 and 1997 before becoming a senior advisor for the Conservative Party in 1998.  

In 2002, Truss was elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) for South West Norfolk and held several positions in the Shadow Cabinet between 2004 and 2010. In the 2010 general election, she increased her majority and became the Minister of State for Education and Childcare in the Department for Education.  

During her time as Education Minister, Truss introduced a number of reforms, including free school meals for all pupils in Reception, Year 1, and Year 2 and the introduction of the English Baccalaureate. In 2014, she was promoted to the post of Secretary of State for Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs and held this role until July.

John Truss, Liz’s father, is a former BBC Radio 4 producer and television director. He was a long-standing director of the BBC’s Farming Today program, and later became Executive Producer of the BBC’s flagship political program Question Time. 

Priscilla Truss, Liz’s mother, is a former teacher and university lecturer, specializing in education studies. She has worked for a number of universities and is currently a professor of education and social inclusion at the University of East London.  

Liz Truss Spouse 

Liz Truss is married to Hugh O’Leary, a solicitor, whom she met at a party in 2001. They married in 2003 and have two children, a son, and a daughter. Truss and O’Leary live in Norwich and are active members of their local community.   

Truss has credited her husband as a “great support” who has enabled her to pursue her career while raising their children. O’Leary is a keen cyclist and has been involved in the local cycling campaign, campaigning for better cycling infrastructure. He also serves as a school governor in Norwich and is an active member of their local church.  

Truss and O’Leary have been seen attending events together, often cheering their children on at sports days and school performances. O’Leary is also a regular attendee at Truss’s political events, supporting his wife as she carries out her duties as a cabinet minister.

Liz Truss is a British Conservative Party politician who has been Secretary of State for International Trade and President of the Board of Trade since 2019. Prior to this, she held a variety of positions, including Secretary of State for Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs, Chief Secretary to the Treasury, and Minister of State for Employment Relations and Consumer Affairs. Truss has also held various shadow cabinet positions since 2005.

She has a BA in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics from Oxford University and an MBA from the University of London. She has also been a vocal advocate for free market economics and fiscal responsibility. Truss has made it a priority to promote global trade and investment, and to strengthen economic partnerships with the UK’s major trading partners. She is also a prominent supporter of the World Trade Organization.

Education 

Truss attended Tonbridge School before going on to read Philosophy, Politics, and Economics at Merton College, Oxford. After graduating, she worked in consultancy and financial services before entering politics. She was elected as the Member of Parliament for South West Norfolk in 2010.
