Liza Todd News

In the 1980s, Hollywood legend Elizabeth Taylor took so many drugs that a doctor reviewing her records thought she was already dead because “the dosages were incompatible with life.”

By 1983, the star’s pill-popping was so bad, according to Kate Andersen Brower’s new biography, “Elizabeth Taylor: The Grit & Glamour of an Icon,” that her then-daughter-in-law, Aileen Getty, anonymously complained to a regulatory body about Taylor’s doctors’ overprescribing.

This allowed for the quantification of the actress’s “Cleopatra” drug intake: According to Brower, three of the actress’ doctors prescribed a total of 1,000 different medications between 1983 and 1988, including tranquillizers, sleeping aids, and pains.

Things eventually became so terrible that Taylor, who had a few unexpected amorous liaisons, requested that her son give her an injection of the potent synthetic narcotic Demerol.

The film siren’s second child with actor Michael Wilding, Christopher Wilding, discloses in the book that the unsettling request took place while he was visiting his mother during her 1976–1982 marriage to Virginia Senator John Warner.

The last time Wilding saw his mother, she was already fairly f-ked up on something. He recalls his mother calling for him to come to her bedroom and that “she sounded wobbly.” She had a syringe of Demerol in her right hand and was sitting at the side of the bed in her pants.

The Oscar winner then requested him to “administer the shot,” which he declined to do, the actor said. “She looked at me with deadened yet disappointed eyes, took a breath, steadied her hand, and plunged the needle into her flesh,” Wilding writes in the book.

During her turbulent marriages to Welsh actor Richard Burton, who was a strong drinker himself, Taylor’s alcohol addiction grew worse.

The couple’s first actual meeting, according to Brower, occurred on the set of “Cleopatra,” where Burton was so inebriated that he was unable to even lift a cup of coffee to his lips. Taylor felt it charming and alluring that he begged for help.

Alcohol served as “the third partner in their marriage,” fueling the couple’s infamously contentious relationship.
