LL Cool J Says Lil Wayne ‘Will Have His Day’ After Super Bowl Halftime Show Snub: ‘Your Time Will Come’

LL Cool J has words of advice for Lil Wayne after the Cash Money Records alum “got really hurt” after Kendrick Lamar was chosen as the 2025 Super Bowl halftime performer.

Speaking with Fat Joe for the rapper’s weekly interview series on Starz, Fat Joe is talkingLL Cool J praised the New Orleans emcee.

“Lil Wayne is one of the most talented dudes on the planet. Period. He’s one of our great artists. He’s an amazing writer,” said LL Cool J. “He’s going to have his day. Let Kendrick have it. Let’s move on.”

The “Mama Said Knock You Out” rapper offered his perspective on why Wayne is hurt. “First of all, the people in New Orleans are amazing, and Wayne comes from a very proud state, Louisiana, and a very proud city, New Orleans, so we have to respect that a little bit.”

“Your time will come. You will have your day. You will. You were a little kid – 14 years old – you became one of the big rappers in the culture… you put things in the vocabulary. You will have You can’t let it break you,” he said is LL Cool J, 56, to Fat Joe. “And the only reason it makes me laugh is because I know how blessed he is. I know how successful he is.”

LL Cool J also linked the situation to his induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2021. “To put it into perspective, I’m in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame,” the New York rapper said. “They voted for me, it seemed like 999,000 times before I got in. It didn’t break me, bro. I didn’t even comment. In fact, I laughed just like I just laughed.”

The rap veteran admitted that “sometimes we spoil ourselves a little unintentionally.”

Wayne, 41, posted a video on Instagram as Lamar, 37, announced he would be headlining the 2025 Apple Music Super Bowl LIX Halftime show at Caesars Superdome. “I had to find enough strength to do it without breaking down,” the “Lollipop” rapper said. “I will say thank you to every voice, every opinion, all the care, all the love and support out there. Your words turned into a weapon and held me when I tried to pull away.”

“It hurt a lot. I blame myself for not being mentally prepared for the disappointment and automatically mentally putting myself in that position as if someone told me that was my position,” Wayne admitted. “But I thought there was nothing better than that place and that stage and that platform in my city, so it hurt.”

In a statement obtained by PEOPLE after the announcement, the Pulitzer Prize-winning rapper said, “Rap music is still the most influential genre to date, and I’m going to be there to remind the world why. They got the real one.”

Jay-Z, whose company Roc Nation is helping to organize the historic performances, said: “Kendrick Lamar is truly a once-in-a-generation artist and performer. His deep love for hip-hop and culture reflects his artistic vision.”
