Loretta Bowersock, 69, of Tempe, Arizona, went missing on December 14 while traveling through Tucson, Arizona, with her longtime lover, Tawa Benderly.
At first, there weren’t many leads for investigators to follow up on the missing wealthy businessman. When Bowersock was dropped off at a nearby mall on the way to Tucson, Benderly said he hasn’t seen her since. There were no witnesses to his disappearance, and a neighborhood check turned up no sign of anything suspicious.
Benderly only stopped cooperating towards the end of the month, and just before Christmas, he shocked everyone by hanging himself in the garage of the house he shared with Bowersock.
Although he left no trace, this immediately led authorities to believe that he was somehow connected to Bowersock’s disappearance. Her daughter told local media that she plans to spend the holidays looking for her mother in a place advised by psychics.
Terri had to wait two years before her mother’s body was finally discovered. The couple discovered some bones that turned out to be Bowersock’s in 2006 while out in the remote wilderness digging for rocks.
He died with a plastic bag placed around his throat and over his head, and his body was buried 18 feet below the surface. According to the forensic analysis, she definitely suffocated to death and the police thought she was probably killed in her own home.
It was revealed that Benderly had been in prison and had been abandoned by his own family. Some 18 years earlier, when he met Bowersock, the self-proclaimed inventor had just been released from prison. The couple’s relationship was tumultuous while dating and they ended up heavily in debt. In a later novel titled Bones in the Desert, author Jana Bommersback wrote about the incident.
