According to Dallas Fed President Logan, current data does not support a pause in rate hikes.
“After raising the target range for the fed funds rate at each of the last 10 FOMC meetings, we made some progress,” she said in prepared remarks for a speech to bankers in the Texas city of San Antonio. “Data in the coming weeks may show that it is appropriate to skip a meeting.” However, as of today, we are not there.”
Market pricing indicates that the Fed will hold the line at its June 13-14 meeting, effectively halting a rate-hiking cycle that began on March 22. The CME Group’s FedWatch gauge, which tracks pricing in the fed funds futures market, predicts a 0.25 percentage point hike at the meeting, though the odds have risen in recent days.
Logan, like other Fed officials who have lately spoken, emphasized that the decision will ultimately be based on inflation and employment data that will be released before the next meeting.
In other remarks Thursday, Fed Governor Philip Jefferson said inflation is too high, but he’s waiting to see how the rate hikes affect the economy before making any further steps.
“History shows that monetary policy works with long and variable lags and that a year is not a long enough period for demand to feel the full effect of higher interest rates,” Jefferson wrote in prepared remarks for a speech in Washington, D.C.
