Louis revealed his decision on Instagram, saying he is quitting rugby and playing American football on January 16, 2024.
The announcement came just minutes before Wales announced their Six Nations squad, which Louis would normally be a part of. This statement surprised many, especially his supporters, teammates and coaches. Furthermore, in order to earn a spot, Louis intends to join the NFL International Player Pathway program. After completing the 10-week program, he could be eligible for the NFL draft in 2024. However, Louis said the move does not necessarily mean he is retiring from rugby, although he has no intention of returning anytime soon.

The former rugby player made a key professional decision, he decided to play in the National Football League. With this, the footballer expressed his gratitude to his fans and hoped to have their support during this trip. However, his choice to make the switch has drawn a mix of positive and negative comments. Additionally, as Louis prepares for this trip, his parents, Maxine and Joe, seem to be fully supportive.
As former athletes, they believe that a player should develop his abilities and skills and seek new experiences. Interestingly, Louis’ father was the one who originally introduced him to the world of football. His father, who played American football for the Cardiff Bay Tigers, instilled in him a passion for the sport. Furthermore, when asked about his reasons for wanting an NFL career, Louis said,
“I want to carry on my father’s legacy and make him proud.”
That being said, Louis’ parents probably can’t wait for their son to make it to the NFL. Furthermore, while his teammates and coaches are saddened by his departure, they are optimistic about his future. Wales coach Warren Gatland said he was surprised but also excited about what the future holds for him.
A look at his professional career
Louis Rees Zammit, a former rugby player, represented Gloucester in the English Premiership and the Wales national team. He started his career with Cardiff Blues and joined Gloucester’s senior team in 2019 as the club’s youngest player in the Premiership. The kid made an early mark, becoming the youngest European player and try scorer. Similarly, in 2020, Louis received his first professional contract and won Gloucester’s Young Player of the Year award.
Furthermore, during his tenure at Gloucester, he was a consistent performer, scoring an incredible 190 points in just 69 appearances for the team.
