Love is blindTyler Francis makes no apologies for his past.

In the latest series of episodes from Season 7 of the Netflix hit, Tyler warned fiancée Ashley Adionser about what people from his past would say about him.

“It’s a great thing to meet me 1728302342 because she would hate me,” he told her during a scene in Mexico. “I was like, ‘Oh, you’re cute, do you want to go on a date?’ Just prepare yourself [for] people [to] be like, ‘He’s not that nice.’ Like, no, I just wasn’t nice to all of you. I didn’t give them a reason to be good.”

Ashley, 32, dismissed it, saying: “There’s nothing anyone can tell me” to change her fiance’s mind, but Tyler, 34, claimed: “You never know who’s going to get out of trouble.”

Now, the two are opening up to PEOPLE in separate interviews about their conversation — and why Tyler felt it necessary to share this information with Ashley.

“Just because I was in the bubble before her. So anyone I dated, the slightest interest in not being serious, I was fine with breaking people up,” says Tyler. “I’m at an age where I didn’t want to waste anyone’s time, so it could come across as mean or cold.”

“I just wanted to let her know that I’m a person, but I came here to find love, and before that I tried,” the account manager continues. “But of course, dating itself is difficult, so I just didn’t like wasting other people’s time. Maybe I kept my cool and I just want to let her know, ‘Hey, there are people who might be like, ah, he’s a– —-.’ No, I’m just honest, honest.”

As for Ashley, she says that Tyler’s confession about his past showed that he was simply “self-aware.”

“The whole point of going into this experiment is to jump in with both feet and accept someone for who they are. So when Tyler said something like, ‘Oh, some people might not say I’m nice,’ I’m like, ‘You’re the sweetest person to me. I was shocked by that – she recalls.

“He went into detail where he said he’s been working long hours and he’s not going to be the nicest person after that and things like that,” Ashley continues. “It’s self-aware for me. I think everyone comes with something and I think a good part of that is recognizing that and figuring out the person you want to evolve into. So, no red flags.”
