Love Island’s Megan Barton-Hanson reveals secret pregnancy after being raped by abusive ex who she feared would kill her

MEGAN Barton-Hanson has revealed she survived repeated incidents of domestic abuse, including at the hands of an ex-boyfriend who viciously attacked her before threatening to kill her on the side of a motorway.

The Essex beauty, who shot to fame in 2018, got pregnant years before Love Island by an older lover after he removed a condom without her consent, also known as stealing.

After the break-up, on the way home from the clinic, Megan, 30, says her partner suddenly “changed” and became violently abusive.

Opening up to relationship coach Paul Carrick Brunson on his We Need To Talk podcast, Megan said: “He said, ‘You’re disgusting. You just killed our baby’.

“Then he said, ‘I’m sick of you,’ then he took a belt, wrapped it around my neck, bit my nose – this was a nose job – and said, ‘Do you think you’re pretty with that new nose?’ , took a bite, started filming me and said: ‘Cry, bitch. Go and tell the camera what you just did’.

“I was so shocked that I couldn’t even shed tears. I couldn’t breathe.”

Host Brunson, 50, pointed out that the terrifying ordeal followed the rape episode – as theft is considered rape under UK law.

Continuing to reminisce, Megan revealed how her ex threatened to kill her before giving her “ten seconds to run” to safety.

She revealed: “We are on the highway, cars are speeding at 70 km/h.

“I thought, even if I try (to run away) it’s only going to make him angrier because he’s going to catch me, so I just stood there frozen.”

The star then admitted she did “the best she could” to convince the man to “calm down” before finally letting her go home.

But later the “nightmare” continued when the boyfriend arrived at Megan’s parents’ home armed with a crowbar.

He “approached” her marine biologist father Kevin, then “strangled” her mum Justine and, as the family fled in their car.

He then threw the lever out the back window, with Megan sitting in the back seat.

She shared: “I thought he was literally going to kill me, the way he was. He was literally psychotic.”

Bravely, Megan later told the police about her ordeal and later gave evidence against her ex at a High Court trial where he was sentenced to a month and a half in prison.

Speaking about another horrifying abuse experience on the podcast, Megan explained to Brunson how she found herself threatened with a knife after breaking up.

She said: “He put a knife to my throat and asked me to put his bank details into my online banking and transfer him ten grand a month because he was taxing me because I don’t love him.

“My hands were shaking. I said, ‘Okay, okay’.

It doesn’t matter what your profession is, whether people think you’re a slut or whether you hid it yourself. It doesn’t matter what the circumstances were. If someone has done something like that, tell someone, report it

“He was trashing my whole house, saying ‘Yeah, I know you don’t love me, you fucking bitch’.”

The next day, admitting she didn’t want to “let down” her mum and wanting to prove she was in a “normal” relationship, Megan went on holiday with the perpetrator where within two days the abuse continued in their hotel room.

Megan, who before Love Island made a living stripping and doing webcams, said: “He slapped me, I fell on the bed and then he walked around the room for about four hours telling me what the f* ** I am, that I’m an escort bitch, that no one will ever respect me. I was just thinking, ‘Am I running?'”

Admitting that earlier this year she “broke to tears” after watching US singer Cassie Ventura get punched by music mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs in a Los Angeles hotel, Megan continued: “I just know how she felt.

“What an animal of a man. I just think it’s the most cowardly thing to make women feel that way.”

For years, Megan kept her experiences of abuse a secret, but she finally spoke out to “get it out of her system” and help other women.

She explains: ”I’m not saying this as ‘woe is me, I’m a victim’.

“It was so long ago that I got a lot of therapy and I’m in a really good place, but I just want girls to know, it doesn’t matter what your profession is, if people think you’re a slut, or if you brought it on yourself.

“Or your friends have been warning you for months and months: ‘Leave that man, he’s not good for you. He showed strange tendencies’.

“It doesn’t matter what circumstances happened. If someone has done something like that, tell someone, report it.

“I don’t like to talk about it because it brings up all that trauma, but I read today on the way in the car, three women kill themselves a week because of domestic abuse because they can’t escape it.

“So the more we report, the more will be done.”

Megan shot to fame on the ITV2 dating show for her cheeky and controversial antics as she found love with islander Wes Nelson, 26.

After the couple split in 2019, Megan met ex-girlfriend Demi Sims, 28, on E4 reality series Celebs Go Dating – a show where Paul plays a dating coach – and their on-again, off-again romance ended four years later in 2023 .

However, Megan reveals that she is still smitten with the youngest sister of The Only Way Is Essex regular Chloe.

She said: “I respect her and I love her so much, I don’t even want to push it past that line more than just kissing, because I’m a lover and if completely, let’s do…. I don’t want to destroy what we have.”

How you can get help

Women’s Aid has the following advice for victims and their families:

  • Always keep your phone nearby.
  • Get in touch with charities for help, including the Women’s Aid live chat helpline and services such as SupportLine.
  • If you are in danger, call 999.
  • Learn about the silent solution, by reporting abuse without speaking into the handset, instead of dialing “55”.
  • Always have some cash with you, including change for a payphone or bus ticket.
  • If you suspect that your partner is about to attack you, try to go to a less risky part of the house – for example, where there is an exit and access to a phone.
  • Avoid the kitchen and garage, where knives or other weapons are likely to be found. Avoid rooms where you could become trapped, such as a bathroom or where you could be locked in a closet or other small space.

Megan, who identifies as fully sexual—she’s attracted to people of either gender—and bisexual, also tells Brunson that she now feels ready to marry and have children with either a woman or a man.

She added: “When I was with my ex-girlfriend, (those) conversations came up – if we wanted kids, how would we do it?

“And obviously, there’s a million ways you can have kids now, so I’m not going to rule it out, but I look up to my parents and their heteronormative relationship and my grandparents and I just think it’s beautiful.

“For a long time I thought, ‘I’m never going to be a stay-at-home wife,’ but there’s a part of me that wants to do it now, which is weird.”
