RC Tiwari is a three-star general in the Indian Army who has served in various command positions in the army. In December 2023, he made headlines when he was appointed as the Commander-in-Chief (GOC) of the Indian Army’s Eastern Command.

Wiki/Biography

Ram Chand Tiwari was born in India. After completing his studies, Tiwari joined the National Defense Academy (NDA) at Khadakwasla, Pune, Maharashtra. There he received three years of military training. Thereafter, he joined the Indian Military Academy in Dehradun, Uttar Pradesh (now Uttarakhand), where he underwent training for one year. He completed his training in 1987. RC Tiwari is an alumnus of the Defense Staff College (DSSC), Wellington. There he earned a master’s degree in strategic studies. He subsequently completed his Master of Philosophy in National Security and Strategic Studies from the National Defense College (NDC), New Delhi. He also studied defense management course at College of Defense Management (CDM), Secunderabad, Telangana.

Profession

After completing his military training in 1987, Ram Chander Tiwari was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Kumaon Regiment. Soon after his service, he went to Belgaum, Karnataka, where he underwent basic military courses. As a major, he took over command of a company in his battalion. Thereafter, he reported to Mhow, Madhya Pradesh, where he attended the Junior Commanding (JC) course. As a lieutenant colonel, he served as the second in command (also known as 2IC) of his battalion. As a colonel, he commanded a National Rifles battalion in the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir. Under his command, the battalion played a vital role in the fight against Kashmiri militants. After being promoted to brigadier general, he took over the command of a high-altitude brigade on the Indian frontline. He subsequently went on to serve at the United Nations (UN). As a Major General, he served as the Commanding General (GOC) of the 17th Infantry Division in Gangtok, popularly known as the Black Cat Division.

He later became a lieutenant general. On March 1, 2022, Tiwari became the commander of the 3rd Army (also known as the Spear Corps) in Kohima. He succeeds Lt. Gen. Johnson P. Matthews and will serve until March 6, 2023.

He was later appointed Chief of Staff of the Indian Army’s South-West Command headquartered in Jaipur. At the end of his term, he was appointed Area Commander, North India.
