Lucy Fisher has been chosen as the new Whitehall editor at the Financial Times. Fisher will join the FT in May after a year as Times Radio’s chief political analyst. Sebastian Payne left the Financial Times in December to become director of the centre-right research group Onward, and she replaces him. FT editor Roula Khalaf said Fisher was “one of the brightest and most intelligent journalists covering British politics today.”
According to the paper, Fisher “will cover the stories behind the Westminster headlines, with a particular focus on the Conservative Party and foreign policy” in her new role as Whitehall editor. In addition, she will co-host the weekly Political Fix podcast and write a monthly column.
I am delighted to be joining the FT, a publication that I have loved as a reader for a long time, said Fisher. At such a critical time in British politics, I can’t wait to start this exciting role. I am also looking forward to working with [political editor] George Parker and the best Westminster reporting team.
Fisher was chief political correspondent, then defense editor at The Times and deputy political editor at The Daily Telegraph before joining Times Radio.
He won the coveted Anthony Howard Award and a $25,000 prize in 2013 when he was 24 for his 5,000-word essay on his proposal to tackle backbench MPs. Consequently, he worked for The Times, The Observer and the New Statesman for a full year.
According to her, “working in the news is the best job in the world,” she said in an interview with the Press Gazette in 2019. ” she added.
