Lucy Liu Explains Why She Spoke Out About Bill Murray’s Behavior on Charlie's Angels: ‘I Am Going to Protect Myself’

Lucy Liu reflects on her conflict with Bill Murray during filming Charlie’s Angels25 years after the release of the film.

While on the set of the 2000 action comedy, Liu reportedly had an awkward moment with Murray, who began “insulting” her while filming a scene, using “unforgivable and unacceptable” language, she claimed to Los Angeles Times 2021. Although she felt she was “probably the least privileged in terms of creative participation,” Liu said, she stood up for herself.

In a new interview with The Guardianreleased on Monday, January 13, Liu, 56, said she has no regrets about the moment.

“I really didn’t think about it,” he said Kill Bill: Vol. 1 star told the outlet of her response to Murray, 74. “I would do it in any situation. I think I will protect myself when I feel something is wrong. It’s an innate thing if you feel there’s injustice, and I always feel that way.”

Liu felt that she could not remain silent while speaking The Guardian“If I had, it would have been a much easier path. But since I was never that person, we had to find a way.”

After rumors of an on-set conflict between Liu and Murray resurfaced on social media in 2021, Liu addressed the conflict on Los Angeles Times‘ Asian enough podcast, acknowledging that some of the details are “private.”

“As we’re doing the scene, Bill starts to kind of rant, and I won’t go into the details, but it goes on and on,” Liu said. “I said, ‘Wow, it looks like he’s looking right at me.’ I couldn’t believe it [the comments] could be towards me, because what do I have to do with anything important at that time? I’m literally looking over my shoulder, like, ‘Who is he talking to behind me?’ I say, ‘I’m so sorry. Are you talking to me?’ And obviously he was, because that’s when it started to become one-on-one communication.”

“Some of the words were unforgivable and unacceptable, and I wasn’t going to just sit back and accept it,” Liu continued in 2021. “So, yes, I stood up for myself and I don’t regret it. Because no matter how low on the totem pole you are or where you come from, there is no need to condescend or put other people down. And I wouldn’t give up, nor should I.”

In the years since Liu came forward, Murray has faced several other allegations of inappropriate behavior on set. In October 2022, the actor settled with an employee from the set of Aziz Ansari’s film To be mortal after he allegedly kissed and rode her, prompting Searchlight Pictures to halt production in April 2022.

“I did something that I thought was funny, and it wasn’t taken that way,” Murray told CNBC in April 2022.

Also in October 2022, Seth Green told the hosts Good mythical morning podcast that — on set SNL when he was just 9 years old — Murray allegedly “dangled” him over a trash can, holding his ankles and eventually dropped him into it. PEOPLE reached out to Murray’s representatives at the time and did not hear back.

In an October 2022 interview with PEOPLE, Geena Davis said Murray verbally berated her in front of a film crew while she was waiting for a wardrobe adjustment on the set of their 1990 comedy. Quick change. PEOPLE also reached out to Murray’s reps when Davis made her allegations, but have not heard back.

“For publicity, I saw him after we shot the movie, but other than that, I didn’t see him or talk to him,” Davis wrote of the incident in her memoir. Dying of Decency: A Memoirhe said.

“I think it’s common knowledge that he could be difficult to work with. And so I don’t feel like arresting him in a way that will necessarily shock him. I think he knows very well how he can behave.”

Murray’s rep did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.
