Lucy Martin, the BBC’s first time presenter openly disabled, was born without the right forearm and hand. She took part in a BBC program in 2015 that gave disabled people interested in climate and the environment the opportunity to learn more about the profession. After the three-day program, she Lucy had the opportunity to start training as a meteorologist.
Lucy was interviewed by Emma Purcell, one of our frequent writers, to find out more about how she got the job, the ups and downs of the presentation, and how her disability has affected her professional and personal life.
I followed the example of my peers in everything they did and never felt that it held me back. I was very involved in dance and drama, as well as cycling and swimming. In kindergarten, I used to cut other kids’ food and tie their shoelaces because maybe I was too handy.
My family just expected me to keep going, not go backwards. This, I think, greatly influenced my way of seeing life. We also belonged to the non-profit organization Reach, which helps children with upper limb deformities. It was wonderful connecting with so many other children who share similar interests thanks to the charity.
I installed a mobile hand prosthesis in elementary school. I had to make appointments to learn how to use it before I could take it home. When I got home, I brought it to school and showed the whole school what I had done. However, the next day I decided that I wouldn’t wear it to school anymore because it was too heavy and I didn’t think I would need it.
There is much more to weather reports than meets the eye. The session was really demanding. There were several different sessions that included storytelling and voice training. I have a meeting with a mentor to get advice on how to get through the day and learn more about the job. In addition, I had the opportunity to communicate with the makeup artist and practice the presentation in the studio.
