Luke Bryan's 2 Kids: All About Bo and Tate

Luke Bryan is in the “golden years” of fatherhood.

The country singer is the proud father of two boys — Thomas “Bo” Boyer Bryan, 16, and Tatum “Tate” Christopher Bryan, 14 — who he shares with wife Caroline Bryan. According to Luke, this current stage with the sons is proving to be one of the most exciting yet.

“As they get older, it’s easier to let them join in,” Luke told PEOPLE in July 2021. “They become little men and become functional little microcosms of me. Their personalities are really different… They become your friends. I mean, they’re still your kids, you still have to discipline yourself and you still have to teach them what’s good and what’s bad in life, but they really do turn into your friends.”

In January 2024, Luke opened up about the journey he hopes to take with his sons while appearing on Audacy Rob + Holly podcast.

“I went fishing for Amazon sea bass. My kids know I did it and they want to go fishing,” he said. “It’s all about involving the family in these things. I’ve got a lot of crazy little things that as a family we’re going to try to cross off the list. I’ve done a really, really great job of brainwashing [my] kids to do exactly what I like to do.”

In addition to Thomas and Tatum, Luke and Caroline also helped raise their nephew Tilden Cheshire and nieces Jordan and Kris Cheshire after the death of their parents. Luke’s sister, Kelly Bryan Cheshire, died of undetermined causes in 2007; seven years later, his brother-in-law Ben Cheshire died of a heart attack. Tilden went to live with Luke and Caroline and their family, and although their nieces didn’t live with the Bryans full-time, they became a closer part of the family.

“We get to live with Kelly through her kids and we see so many things in her kids that remind us of her,” Luke told PEOPLE in 2021. He added, “As a family, we’re really trying to do good to just remember the beauty of the people we’ve lost and not to think about the fact that they are not everyday in our lives.”

Thomas “Bo” Boyer Bryan, 16

Luke and Caroline welcomed their first son, Thomas “Bo” Boyer Bryan, on March 18, 2008, in Nashville. Thomas is his father’s name (Luke’s full name is Thomas Luther Bryan) and Boyer is his mother Caroline’s maiden name.

“I’m thrilled! Everyone’s doing great! My fishing buddy is finally here! I thought being on stage was an amazing feeling, but there’s nothing that beats watching my wife bring our son into this world. No I wouldn’t miss this for anything what,” the “Play It Again” singer said in a statement at the time.

Bo always had a close relationship with his older cousin Tilden. When the Bryan family took in Til after his parents died, the two grew even closer with Luke noting that the then 6-year-old Bo had become Til’s mini-me and “nagging little brother”.

During 2018, Luke was asked what he was most proud of when it came to his children while attending the iHeartRadio Music Festival. “How [they’ve carved a] The way to be gentlemen and gentlemanly boys,” he told reporters.

He also said his sons are “different” than he was at their age.

“They come home and sit down, write their homework, and I say, ‘I didn’t do that when I was a kid.’ They are just well-developed children,” he explained. “Learning farm life and how to live on a farm and do things outdoors, but they also came with me and were on set american idol and to these big cities and watched me work at Dodgers Stadium and [have seen] the whole world and have a beautiful perception of it.”

However, their father’s fame does not “bother” them. “I wouldn’t say it gives me more cool points. As long as I can play with them in the yard or wrestle them on the floor, that’s pretty much all they care about,” Luke once told PEOPLE.

On Bo’s 15th birthday, his mom shared a sweet birthday tribute on Instagram. She shared a selfie of the mother-son duo, a throwback photo of Bo as a child, and a video of Luke hilariously waking Bo in bed by jumping on him as the birthday music played. She captioned the post: “My once tiny baby is officially 15!!! I may have to take medication next year to teach him to drive. 😬 We love you sweet Bo!!! ❤️.”

During an appearance on Audacy’s in June 2023 Katie & Company podcast, Luke talked about teaching Bo how to drive.

“He’s very frustrated right now because he thinks he knows how to drive, but he has no idea what he’s doing,” he explained. “He thinks he’s pretty skilled because he can operate a 4-wheeler or a Polaris, but he’s not, I assure you.”

The couple welcomed their second son, Tatum “Tate” Christopher Bryan, on August 11, 2010, in Nashville.

The proud dad confirmed the happy news to PEOPLE, saying in a statement: “All I was hoping for was one boy and having two will be fun. I’ve already picked out new fishing spots for us.” He also said that Tate looks “pretty much like a copycat of Bo”.

Of his second son’s nickname, Luke told The Boot in 2010, “Tatum’s a guy from my hometown, and my brother’s name was Chris back then. Then we’re going to have Bo and Tate — sounds like two little rednecks!” Luke’s brother Chris died in a car accident at the age of 26.

Like his older brother Bo, Tate became close to his older cousin Tilden when Luke and Caroline took him in. “Tate sleeps with Tila every night,” Bryan told PEOPLE in 2021. Tate was just 4 years old when he and Bo “woke up and they had a big brother.”

Along with his brother, Tate has enjoyed many father-son fishing trips with his dad over the years, just as Luke had planned. In February 2022, Tate caught his first 10 lb fish, an accomplishment that took his father 45 years to accomplish. Luke took to Instagram to share the exact moment they weighed the fish and found out, and Tate can be seen jumping up and down with excitement.

Tate also seems to have a cheeky sense of humor. On his 12th birthday in August 2022, Caroline shared a series of snaps of her youngest, including several snaps of Tate making silly faces. The tribute wrote: “My baby. He’s 12 today….sarcasm he expressed “ass”…no wonder he’s my shadow. He’s my Thunder Buddy and acts just like me…Sorry you have my genes, Dad! I love you! Happy birthday Tot 💙.”
