Fickell began attending DeSales High School. In 1992, he was a prominent member of the Ohio State Buckeyes defensive unit. From 1993 to 1996, he started 50 consecutive games in the bow, a school record.
Then, after graduating from Ohio State in 1997, he signed as an untrained free agent with the NFL’s New Orleans Saints. He then joined the NFL coaching staff at Ohio State as a graduate assistant in 1990.
Then, in 2000, he was hired as a full-back coach at the University of Akron. After two years, he returned to Ohio State as team coordinator. In 2005, he was promoted to co-defensive coordinator.
