Luke Grimes' Cowboy Core Lifestyle Lives on with New Stetson Legacy Campaign: 'Spray It on, You Feel Cool' (Exclusive)

Luke Grimes’ latest collaboration with iconic legacy brand Stetson embodies his “fresh yet still rugged” style sensibility.

The Yellowstone the actor, 40, sat down to chat with PEOPLE about his partnership with Stetson Legend, the brand’s new luxury cologne featuring notes of citrus, spice and wood texture, aimed at the next “generation of Stetson men.”

“A modern, elevated expression of the brand’s iconic Western heritage, Stetson Legend embodies the same quality and sophistication that defines its iconic hats, boots, apparel and accessories,” the brand says of the fragrance in a press release.

For Grimes, the partnership with Stetson was a no-brainer, given how well the company’s traditional cowboy style aligns with so much of the work he’s done throughout his career — including everything from portraying Kayce Dutton to releasing his eponymous state record.

“When I was trying to think of what brands I wanted to work with, Stetson came to mind just because it’s an American brand. It’s about the American lifestyle, the Western lifestyle,” Grimes tells PEOPLE. – Of course, I’ve been on the show for the last seven years, that has something to do with it.

While Grimes says the fact that his father wore Stetson cologne growing up gave him a personal connection to the cause, he credits the recent resurgence in popularity of the cowboy lifestyle to people being drawn to scents like this one.

“I just think the lifestyle of Western countries is in a phase right now and I think it’s cool again,” he says. “People are diving back into what that means, and the roots of our country and what sets us apart and our identity as a country from other countries.”

“When you look at that lifestyle, I think the Stetson is just a big part of it. Everybody, when you go get your first cowboy hat, it’s usually a Stetson,” Grimes continues. – It’s just part of the fabric.

Grimes’ personal connection to the fragrance goes even further than his father simply owning it — it was the first cologne he ever wore.

“I feel like whenever you wear cologne for the first time, it’s usually your dad’s. You find it in the drawer, spray it on, and feel cool,” Grimes recalls. “And for me it definitely was, Stetson.”

While it’s “not something I wear very often,” he jokes, adding that despite his decision to collaborate with Stetson for the cologne, “it doesn’t make sense to me for what I do most of the time.”

“I don’t necessarily need to smell good. But when I’m getting dressed up and I’m going on red carpets or I need to look good or feel good, then I’ll usually put on cologne and obviously I’ve got a lot of Stetsons in my drawer at the moment, so that’s what I’m going,” he adds.

Much of Grimes’ cowboy image can be attributed to his time there Yellowstonewhich is scheduled to air the second half of its fifth season this November. Details about the highly-anticipated Season 5b are being kept under complete “lock,” says Grimes, but he only revealed a few things about the end of the season.

“They weren’t even giving the crew scripts,” he revealed to PEOPLE. “It was very, very secretive this year. But I will say that reading it, I was very pleased with how it all tied together.”

“I think everyone can be sure that it will come to an end, and it’s the right end — and it’s perfect,” Grimes adds.
