Lucas Raley News
Snapping a four-game skid against baseball’s greatest spelled success for the Oakland A’s, as the Tampa Bay Rays became the first team with 50 wins.
The Rays beat the 19-game A’s 4-3 Thursday after Manuel Margot and Luke Raley each hit solo homers with one out in the eighth.
Taj Bradley, the Rays’ top prospect, retired the first 11 batters he faced for a career-high 11 before giving up Seth Brown’s game-tying two-run single in the fifth.
In the seventh inning, the A’s had a run on former Oakland pitcher Jake Diekman when the defense made an outstanding play. Seth Brown hit a hard grounder out at 107.9 mph that second baseman Taylor Walls hit to save the run, and catcher Francisco Mejía then threw to first to complete an inning-ending double play.
With the force present at home, Walls admitted: “I knew I had time and I took a half step back before that.” I didn’t really have time to consider because the ball was smoking. But as soon as I realized I hadn’t touched it, I realized there was potential for a double play.
Diekman was replaced by Robert Stephenson (1-0), who completed the seventh inning. With a sore left hip, right-hander Pete Fairbanks returned from the disabled list after 15 days to record his sixth save.
After playing basketball in the family pool with her 3-year-old son Isaac, Fairbanks hit a backboard and injured her right eye.
Now teach him a valuable life lesson: You can’t be caught off guard under the rim while you’re in the paint, Fairbanks said. “Did I have a bruised eye from that? That. Consequently, it was nice. My wife and just about everyone else here made fun of me for it. So the last five days have been good.
For the A’s, who had their season-best seven-game hitting streak snapped the night before, Paul Blackburn had a career-high nine strikeouts. Austin Pruitt (1-4) took the loss.
For the runner on first base against Bradley in the third inning, JJ Bleday beat out an infield single. Before Thursday, Blake Snell against the Mariners on June 3, 2018 was the only Rays pitcher to retire the first six batters with a strikeout. It was the first time since April 8, 1987, when they faced Frank Viola and the Twins, that the A’s top six hitters had hit in one game.
After hitting three doubles the day before, Margot backed up Bradley with his third home run in the fourth. Margot hit three home runs, all three against the A’s.
