Lupita Nyong'o Gave Herself a Vocal Cord Polyp Doing a 'Super-Positive' Voice in The Wild Robot

“Super Positive Voice” Lupita Nyong’o has played a robot in her upcoming animated film, wild robot, strained her voice so much that she got a polyp on her vocal cords and had to rest her vocal cords for three months.

During an appearance on the June 20 episode Late Night with Seth Myersthe Oscar winner shared that her character Roz, who is a robot, “goes through this journey of finding, I guess, what we would call humanity, like empathy.”

“And so at the beginning of the film I chose this very, kind of super-positive voice. And it was, like, just not in my vocal register, which is a lot lower,” she explained.

A cheery voice eventually strained her vocal cords, a star A Quiet Place: Day One divided.

“Benign vocal fold lesions are noncancerous growths that can form on one or both vocal folds,” the Cleveland Clinic explains, adding that they include nodules, cysts and polyps, which Nyong’o developed. “Most lesions occur because you overuse or abuse your vocal cords. Treatments include voice therapy, behavioral changes to improve your voice health, and surgery.”

Nyong’o, 41, said she “lost the ability to speak, and the doctor put me on a vocal cord rest, and I was on a vocal cord rest for three months.”

She also shared that she should have had surgery, but when the doctor told her that 35% of people recover naturally, “I was so determined to be part of that 35%. And I did. I was cured.”

According to the Cleveland Clinic, it’s not common to recover without surgery: “You’ll likely need surgery if you have a polyp or cyst. Unlike nodules, polyps and cysts don’t usually get better with voice therapy.”

Still, Nyong’o didn’t let her speech impediment stop her from going on Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour and Beyoncé’s Renaissance Tour. She just went with some extras.
