Lupita Nyong’o Plays with Cat Yoyo, Says She’s Grateful for ‘the Truth, Even When It Has Hurt’

Lupita Nyong’o weighs in on what’s important this Thanksgiving.

The Black panther actress, 40, shared an Instagram post Thursday featuring her cat, Yoyo, in which she shared the many things she’s grateful for.

“I feel grateful today. Grateful for peace: not guaranteed. Grateful for the truth: even when it hurt. Grateful for the tears: they washed away so much pain,” she wrote. “I am grateful for the therapy: it has kept me healthy.”

In the video, Nyong’o played with Yoyo as blocks of text filled in around her and instrumental music played. She then expressed gratitude for other aspects of her life, including her family and friends, and of course, her cat.

Lupita Nyong’o adopted a cat after splitting from Selema Masekela: ‘It’s time to embrace new possibilities’

β€œThankful for the family: they were so kind. Grateful for friends: they were so present. I am grateful for new experiences: they changed my energy. Grateful for the ocean: because it is constant and constantly changing,” she wrote. β€œAnd I’m grateful for Yoyo: he kept my heart open and tender.

“Through it all, I am grateful,” she captioned the post.

The introspective announcement comes just over a month after the Oscar-winning actress announced her split from boyfriend Selem Masekela in a heartfelt Instagram post.

“At this moment it is necessary for me to share a personal truth and publicly distance myself from someone I can no longer trust,” she wrote at the time. “I’m in the season of heartbreak over a love suddenly and devastatingly extinguished by fraud.”

The star said she shared the personal news to β€œkeep it πŸ’―, and [hoped] that the knowledge of my experience might be useful to someone else who is experiencing the grip of a broken heart and who is willing to try to escape the pain and miss the wisdom that comes from it. #Abort.”

A few days later, she announced that she had adopted Yoyo, writing on Instagram that although she had long been afraid of cats, she was ready to be open to “changes and new possibilities.”

She explained that a friend (whom she later discovered was Tony-nominated sound designer Palmer Herreran) helped her through the process and even accompanied her on visits to several animal shelters.

At first, Nyong’o only adopted Yoyo, but she realized she couldn’t give him up after three days.

“I never understood people whose phones were full of photos and videos of their pets β€” now I’m one of those people! It might look like I’m saving Yoyo, but really, Yoyo is saving me,” she wrote.
