Mr. Kumar started working with LIC in 1983 as a Direct Recruitment Officer. During his career, he has led three regions of LIC: South Region, North Central Region and North Region, located in Chennai, Kanpur and Delhi respectively. He also serves as Senior Divisional Manager, Ahmedabad and Ernakulam divisions. Kumar has served as Area Manager (Marketing), Kolkata and Area Manager (Personal and Internal Relations), Chennai Division. He subsequently became executive director and served as head of human resources. In this role, he also managed the Pensions and Group Insurance divisions. He is credited with launching many employee-friendly initiatives. He subsequently became District Manager (Responsible) for the North District. On March 14, 2019, he became the Chairman of LIC of India for a five-year term.

He completed his term extended from July 2021 to March 2022. He received a second extension, from April 2022 to March 2023. The reason for the extension was to enable him to complete the mega LIC initial public offering (IPO). Although there were rumors that the Narendra Modi government would extend the term for another six months, his term ended in March 2023 and Siddharth Mohanty took over as chairman.
