Muthusamy Sankaran was born in Tamil Nadu, India. He received his Master of Science degree in Physics from Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirappalli in 1985. He joined the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) in 1986.

Profession

He first joined ISRO Satellite Center (ISAC) in 1986. Later, he worked on many different projects including solar arrays, power systems, satellite positioning systems and low earth orbit (LEO) satellites, geostationary satellites, radio frequency communication system satellites for navigation, and outer space missions such as the Lunar Craft and Mars orbits Aircraft Mission (MOM). He has also been involved in projects related to power generation and distribution systems for interplanetary missions such as ISRO satellite 70V bus, Chandrayaan-1, 2 and 3, Mars Orbiter Mission and Astrosat. In 2015, he served as group director of the Power Systems Group.

On June 1, 2021, he was appointed as Director, UR Rao Satellite Center (URSC), which is the center for design, development and implementation of all satellites of ISRO. He was part of the Chandrayaan 3 mission team in 2023, which also included S. Somanath (Head, ISRO), P. Veeramuthuvel (Project Director), Srikant (Mission Director), S Unnikrishnan Nair (Director, VSSC), A Rajarajan (Laboratory Director) and Kalpana K (Deputy Project Director).

  • After the successful landing of Chandrayaan-3 on the South Pole of the Moon on August 23, 2023, M Sankaran gave a very popular speech in which he thanked the people who criticized the Indian moon mission and the scientists associated with it. Even an innocent remark can help get the job done, he said.

  • He has published numerous scientific papers related to the fabrication and testing of solar panels and battery systems.
