Magdalena Abakanowicz, Polish artist who died at the age of 86, is a descendant of Genghis Khan. At least that was the family tradition. She enjoyed privileges when she was young in the 1930s, but World War II and its aftermath would soon strip her of those rights.
Despite his education, however, he was able to start a very successful career in communist Poland and eventually gain worldwide recognition for his emotional textile sculptures of the human form.
She began her career as a painter in the 1950s and soon began experimenting with various other media, including welded steel and textiles. Maria Laszkiewicz, a weaver, invited her to participate in the first International Tapestry Biennale in Lausanne in 1962.

A few years later, he began hanging rough-textured pieces of fabric from gallery ceilings to create unique abstract shapes that he named “Abakans” in his honor. At the same time, he made installations out of thick coils of rope whose fibers and knots he compared to a “petrified organism” because of its appearance. He even wrapped a similar frame around Edinburgh Cathedral in 1972.
By the mid-1970s, she had created the paintings for which she is best known: severed heads and headless bodies, usually made of burlap and supported by a steel frame or affixed with glue and resin.
Many of them are just empty shells of human backs, sitting in rows outside, shoulders slumped, limbs stunted. They have been displayed all over the world, from the banks of the Vistula to Calgary and Llandudno. The sources that inspired them range from silhouettes of Polish believers or Indonesian dancers to images of Auschwitz victims.
The bronze sculptures, known as Becalmed Beings, commissioned by the city of Hiroshima in 1992 in response to a petition signed by more than 6,000 residents, were undoubtedly the most moving. The sad associations in this situation are clear. Yet Abakanowicz’s barely diverse character lines evoke a strong sense of shared experience even under more neutral circumstances.
She reacted in the most passionate way to the political turmoil in her homeland. Poland began a phase of reform with the establishment of the Solidarity union, which was momentarily put on hold by the imposition of a state of emergency in 1981. In response to this oppression, Abakanowicz locked one of his headless torsos in a wooden cage, and more Late, a decade later, War Games – Wood began.
