Mike Francesa, who had previously retired, was replaced in the afternoon drive on WFAN by Grey, Bart Scott, and Chris Carlin in late 2017. She talked about the encounter with Barrett Sports Media.
It was undoubtedly an overwhelming feeling, according to Grey. “I suppose it would have also been terribly lonely if it weren’t for Chris Carlin and Bart Scott — the three of us began that programme — and if it weren’t for our fantastic connection. I’m so grateful I had those guys to lean on and we got to experience it together because it was a major deal for the sports talk radio market.
After a little over four months, Francesa decided to come out of retirement, and the trio that had taken his position was relocated earlier in the day. Carlin eventually lost his job (and shortly after that, he joined ESPN). Grey claimed that she is not a fan of the competitive nature of radio and television hosts.
“I didn’t love doing [argumentative] radio,” Grey said. “I don’t like the ‘Mike and the Mad Dog’ [type] where they just argue all the time, or the Stephen A. Smith stuff where you argue all the time. I don’t typically adore that. While having a disagreement is nice, I dislike it when it becomes heated.
Grey was paired with Marc Malusis after Scott left WFAN for ESPN New York. The early afternoon slot on WFAN was eventually taken over by Brandon Tierney and Tiki Barber, as was revealed in late 2021, and Grey teamed up with Andrew Perloff, a longtime producer of the “Dan Patrick Show,” on CBS Sports Radio nationally. At WPIX, Malusis is currently a sports anchor.
Grey had to become accustomed to the quirks of regional radio when she transferred from Sports Illustrated to WFAN.
I had never really followed simply New York sports, so that took some getting accustomed to, according to Grey. “There were all the same difficulties that come with developing any new show; it just so happened to be [on] a very public platform where there were lots of eyes on us.”
Grey said, “When you’re doing [local radio], there’s no amount of minutiae that’s too minor. “We can discuss the middle relievers for the Yankees, the Mets’ closer, or who should start at third base for the Yankees. That’s a really interesting subject, and New Yorkers will find it appealing.
