After graduating from high school, he attended Michigan State University in East Lansing to pursue a career as a television analyst. He played alongside Greg Kelser, Jay Vincent and Mike Berkovich in college. He finished the season as a rookie with averages of 17.0 points, 7.9 rebounds and 7.4 assists. Johnson was selected in the 1979 NBA draft after two years of college, averaging 17.1 points, 7.6 rebounds and 7.9 assists per game.
Magic Johnson was drafted by the Los Angeles Lakers in 1979. He was teammates with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar at the time. He averaged 18 points, 7.7 rebounds and 7.3 assists per game for the NBS All-Rookie Team. Johnson missed 45 games the following season with a torn cartilage. He then signed a 25-year contract with the Lakers for $25 million, making him the highest-paid player in history at the time.
