Mahek was born Raspreet Kaur Chahal on February 1, 1979 in Oslo, Norway. Her family and friends call her by different names like Preeti and Mahek. She has been interested in dance since childhood and has acted in many songs such as Sajna Ve Sajna in the Hindi film Chameli (2004), Talwar Re in the Hindi film Chhodon Naa Yaar (2007), Jai in the Hindi film Agre Ka Ghagra in Veeru (2009)), Mu Mu Mudhante in Telugu film Kedi (2010), Chamki Mast Jawaani in Hindi film Yamla Pagla Deewana (2011), Na Champa in Bengali film Bikram Singha (2012) Na Chameli, Ok Report from the Punjabi film Jatt Airways (2013), Ka Thalkattu from the Kannada film Mr. Airavata (2015), etc. She works in multiple languages including Telugu, Hindi, Punjabi, Bengali, Kannada, Tamil and Norwegian. Mahek rose to fame after appearing in the reality show Bigg Boss Season 5 in 2011. In 2012, she opened her own clothing store, Mahek Chahal Clothing, in Oslo, Norway.

She was educated at the Norwegian School in Oslo, Norway. After completing her studies, she traveled to India to pursue an acting career. In 2002, she made her acting debut in the Telugu film Neetho, playing the lead role of Shalini. Unfortunately, the film failed at the box office. Before starring in the feature film, she made several short films such as Jindey (2000), Dil Te Maar Gayi (2001), Chakde Bolly (2001) and O Vekho (2002).
She made her Bollywood debut in 2003, playing the role of Pooja Iyengar in the comedy film Nayee Padosan. She also works as a model and has walked the ramp for numerous fashion designers.
In 2011, she participated in the fifth season of the reality show Bigg Boss and finished as the runner-up. In the same year, he participated in the Norwegian reality show “Fristet”. She also tried her luck in comedy and participated in the comedy reality show Kahani Comedy Circus Ki in 2011.
