Mahesh Joshi

Mahesh Joshi is an Indian politician who was elected as an MLA and Member of Parliament and served as PHED and Groundwater Minister in the Ashok Gehlot Cabinet in 2021. He is a long-standing member of the Indian National Congress (INC) and has served as an INC MP on several occasions. He holds important positions in the Rajasthan Congress. He was accused of abetting others to commit suicide in 2023.

In May 2022, a 23-year-old girl from Delhi accused Mahesh’s son Rohit of raping her on the pretext of marriage. She alleged that Rohit raped her multiple times between January 8, 2021, and April 17, 2022. She said she met Rohit on Facebook in 2021 and their first meeting was in Jaipur. They met again on January 8, 2021, at Sawai Madhopur, where Rohit injected her with drugs and took nude photos and videos of her. She said they later went to a hotel in Delhi where they registered as a couple. She alleged that Rohit had drugged her, assaulted her, made obscene videos and threatened to upload them on social media. She also complained that Rohit had promised her that he would marry her after divorcing his wife and when she became pregnant, he forced her to have an abortion. According to IPC sections 376 (rape), 328 (causing hurt by poison, etc. with intent to commit a crime), 312 (causing miscarriage), 366 (kidnapping, abducting or luring a woman into forced marriage, etc.), 377 (unlawful natural crimes) and 506 (criminal intimidation). Rohit reportedly went into hiding after the matter was reported in the media. There were rumors that Mahesh was helping his son; however, Mahesh refuted these claims and said that his son was innocent and that he would do everything possible to help the police.

The Rajasthan High Court provided police protection to the girl as she claimed there was a threat to her life. Rohit Joshi was granted anticipatory bail by a local court on June 9, 2022. He was interrogated for three hours on June 10, 2022, at Delhi’s Sadar Bazar police station. On June 11, 2022, when the complainant was with her mother in Delhi’s Kalindi Kunj area, some gangsters threatened her to withdraw the case and threw a chemical substance that looked like ink on her face. She was taken to AIIMS in Delhi and admitted to the trauma centre.

On April 17, 2023, a resident of Jaipur’s Chandi ki Taksal area named Ramprasad Meena hanged himself at the office of a transport company in Subhash Chowk area. Before committing suicide, he made a video accusing Mahesh Joshi and six others, namely priest Devendra Sharma of Girdhari temple, Lalit Sharma, owner of Munji Tank at Royal Sheraton Hotel, Deva Awasthi and Lalchand Devnani.
