Massa arrested by police
On September 13, 2022, Masha was arrested by a guided patrol while traveling to Tehran with her family. Police claimed she violated the public enforcement of hijab rules and failed to wear the hijab in accordance with government standards.

After being arrested by police, she was taken into police custody when her brother heard the police beating Martha. She was subsequently taken to Kasra Hospital and fell into coma. Doctors at the hospital said she was brain-dead due to brain damage including bleeding from her ears and bruises under her eyes. She died on September 16, 2022, after being in a coma for three days.

Protests after Massa’s death
After her death on September 16, 2022, protests broke out in many cities in Iran. People chanted slogans such as “Women, life, freedom” and “Death to the dictator”. Protests also took place outside Tehran’s Kasra Hospital, where she was hospitalized, with protesters pepper-spraying them to stop them. Many people have been killed by police during protests against the Islamic Republic’s strict dress code. In some cities, women in crowds were seen burning their headscarves. People on social media also protested her death. Some Iranian women cut their hair in support of the protests and posted videos on social media. As protests grew, the Iranian government suspended access to many apps, including Instagram and WhatsApp.

Protesters are demanding justice for Mahesa and a change in strict hijab laws. Police shared a video on social media in which Massa is seen unconscious on the ground. They claim she was not harmed by police but suffered a heart attack. They talked about it and said,
The patient was resuscitated, the heartbeat was restored, and the patient was admitted to the intensive care unit. Unfortunately, 48 hours later on Friday, the patient suffered another cardiac arrest and died of brain death. Despite the best efforts of the medical team, they were unable to revive her and the patient died. “
