Mahua Moitra joined the youth wing of the Indian National Congress (INC) in 2008. She worked hard and rose through the ranks, becoming a well-known leader and a familiar face in West Bengal. She is considered Rahul Gandhi’s most trusted person in West Bengal. She implemented Rahul Gandhi’s Aam Admi ka Sipahi (AAKS) initiative in West Bengal with stunning results.

Mamata Banerjee announced Mahua as the TMC candidate for the 2019 general elections from Krishna Nagar constituency in West Bengal.
She campaigned extensively for the 2019 election. She traveled to various areas of Krishna Nagar and established good connections with people of all age groups with the help of TMC grassroots workers. She reportedly traveled to areas that other leaders had never visited or even knew existed. During the campaign, she often spoke to the people about their problems.
She won the 2019 general election and was elected as the MP from Krishna Nagar constituency in West Bengal. She defeated the BJP’s Kalyan Chaubey by a margin of 65,404 votes. A day after her name was announced as the winner of the constituency, she shared her election certificate on social media.
In her maiden speech in Parliament, she spoke of the “rise of fascism” in India. Her speech went viral on social media. Some also call it the speech of the year. In March 2023, she was appointed as one of the national spokespersons of TMC.

- As TMC spokesperson, she participated in many live TV debates. Once, during one such debate in which Union Minister Babul Supriyo also participated, he called her “Mahua Drunk on Mahua” (the country drink of West Bengal is also known as “Mahua” ). The news anchor immediately asked Supriyo not to make personal comments, which was later met with backlash from many. Mahua filed a defamation lawsuit against Supriyo on January 4, 2017; claiming he insulted her on national television, suggested she was drunk, damaged her reputation and offended her modesty.
- On January 11, 2017, Babul Supriyo filed a defamation suit against Mahua Moitra and three others from TMC. He accused them of falsely accusing him of close ties to the Rose Valley Chit Fund scam. Supriyo said Mahua, along with other members of the TMC, used his name in the funding scam and influenced people to believe he was involved in the scam; no evidence of his involvement in the scam was provided to them.
- On August 3, 2018, Mahua slapped a female police officer and was later detained at the Assam airport. She was detained overnight and barred from boarding a flight to Kolkata after being accused of assaulting a police officer on duty. She was released the next morning and traveled to Kolkata where a case was registered against her.
- On July 6, 2022, the Trinamool Congress condemned Mahua Moitra’s remarks about Goddess Kali at an India Today conclave. At the conclave, Ms Moitra pointed to a poster depicting a “version of the goddess” and said:
Kali is a meat eating…drinking goddess to me. For me, that’s Cali.
After her controversial remarks about Goddess Kali, the TMC issued a statement on social media condemning Ms. Moitra’s remarks; the statement read,
@MahuaMoitra’s comments on #IndiaTodayConclaveEast2022 and the views she expressed on Goddess Kali are expressed in her personal capacity and are not endorsed by the party in any way shape or form. The All India Trinamool Congress strongly condemned such remarks. ”
- In August 2022, after TMC’s Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar raised the issue of price hike in the Lok Sabha, a video went viral of her hiding an expensive Louis Vuitton handbag And was criticized by netizens. She later responded to the incident on Twitter and shared a collage of her own photos.

- On February 7, 2023, when TDP MP K Ram Mohan Naidu was addressing the Lok Sabha, she was spotted hurling insults at BJP MP Ramesh Bidhuri. This happened after she completed her speech in the Lok Sabha on the motion of thanks for the President’s address. Later, she defended her swearing by saying there was nothing wrong with saying “an apple for an apple.” She said,
Everything I say is off the record, all I can say is that I would call an apple an apple, not an orange. I will tell the truth. If they take me to the Privileges Committee, I will give my side of the story. “

- In October 2023, Mahua Moitra faced charges from politician Nishikant Dubey, who accused her of accepting bribes in cash and gifts from a businessman named Darshan Hiranandani to ask questions in Parliament. On October 15, 2023, Dube wrote to the Speaker of the Lok Sabha demanding an inquiry into the matter. MCA, on the other hand, later responded to the accusations through a post on X, calling them baseless.

In an interview on October 28, 2023, Mahua admitted that she had provided Darshan with her parliamentary login ID and password. She explained that this was done to allow someone from Darshan’s office to input issues to be raised in the Lok Sabha. MCA said in the interview,
Someone from Darshan Hiranandani’s office typed the question I asked on the Parliament website. After the questions were asked, they would call me and I would read them all in one sitting because I was always busy with my constituency. After asking the question, an OTP (one-time password) appeared on my phone. I will give the OTP before submitting the issue. So the idea that Darshan would log into my ID and ask his own questions is ridiculous. “
Mahua Moitra was expelled from Lok Sabha on December 8, 2023, after the Lok Sabha Ethics Committee found her guilty. However, Mahua filed a case in the Supreme Court of India on December 11, 2023, challenging the Commission’s decision. On April 2, 2024, she was registered by the Ministry of Education for a money laundering case.
- In January 2024, Mahua Moitra faced legal charges for allegedly spying on her ex-boyfriend Jai Anant Dehadrai. On December 29, 2023, Jai wrote a letter to CBI Director Praveen Sood and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, claiming that Moitra might be using his phone number to track his location. He accused her of conducting illegal surveillance with the help of some West Bengal policemen. Jai also claimed that Moitra had stalked her other ex-boyfriend Suhaan Mukerji when she suspected him of having an affair with a German woman.
- On March 20, 2024, she received a summons from the Delhi High Court after her ex-partner Jai Dehadrai filed a defamation suit against her. Jai Dehadrai said Mahua’s derogatory comments about him exposed him to several bouts of online abuse, resulting in him losing clients and job opportunities.
