Maisie Williams ‘Couldn’t Pin Down’ Her Sense of Self Because of Game of Thrones: ‘I Was So Lost for So Long’

Maisie Williams’ role as Arya Stark affected her personal identity – and it took time for her to find the right balance.

The actress took over the celebrity Game of Thrones role at only 12 years old. “I was lost for so long, and I knew I was, and when I couldn’t pinpoint what I felt was my identity within that, it brought me a lot of discomfort,” she told The Sunday Times. “It’s hard for me to go back there and talk about how hard it was just because I think it’s over.”

Now 26, Williams is “much more comfortable in her own skin.” Looking back on her early years in Hollywood, Williams said that untethered sense of self caused additional stress as she looked for other acting jobs.

“It was the worst when I was the most out of touch with myself — not knowing your identity and things like that — I think the rejection at that point was so personal, so painful,” she said. “I would only compare myself to other actresses, to the way people looked and all the most destructive ways you can compare yourself.”

From Game of Thrones ended in 2019, Williams took the time to fully explore her identity. She still identifies as a woman, but she has examined gender fluidity, which is telling Tatler magazine: “I like that I don’t have to label it, I guess, and I can just express myself that way and still feel and identify as a woman.”

Williams is similarly open about who and how she loves. “I never sat and thought about my sexuality for hours. It’s like what Shailene Woodley said: ‘I fall in love with personalities, not people or genders,'” she previously told Nylon. “I don’t have a problem with anyone who wants to be labeled, but I also think it’s nobody’s business. Do what you want.”
