Major UK train station EVACUATED as ‘smoke seen rising from platforms’ sparking chaos for ‘thousands of passengers’

A MAJOR UK train station has been evacuated as “smoke was seen rising from the platform” causing travel chaos for thousands of passengers.

Four platforms at London Waterloo have been evacuated after reports of a “small fire”.

Waterloo is one of the busiest stations in the capital with almost 200,000 passengers using it every day.

Lines have since reopened, but trains may be cancelled, delayed or revised until 10:30am today.

South Western Railway said trains between the country’s fourth busiest station and Clapham Junction were affected following the incident on Sunday morning.

London Fire Brigade confirmed that its crews were called to investigate the smell of smoke, but found that there was no fire at the scene.

At X, LFB said: “The alarm is believed to have been caused by dust from a fan heater. We have now left the scene.”

South Western Railway said trains may have been cancelled, delayed or revised by 10.30am, although all lines had reopened.

Platforms 20 to 24 were not used while the incident was resolved.

It comes as disruption to Avanti West Coast services is expected on Sunday as members of the Rail, Maritime and Transport Union (RMT) launched a series of walkouts over a holiday dispute.

Avanti urged its customers to travel on either side of Sunday, which marks the start of the strike every Sunday until May 25.

A reduced timetable is in place on strike days, with fewer services operating during limited hours.

On Sunday, Avanti West Coast will run one train per hour between London Euston and Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool and Preston.
