News Malka Leifer

Malka Leifer did not apply for bail at a Victorian court hearing less than a day after arriving in Melbourne for extradition from Israel and almost 13 years after she allegedly fled Australia with child sexual abuse allegations against her. .

Leifer did not respond when Judge Johanna Metcalf asked if she could be heard at her appearance by video link at Melbourne Magistrates Court on Thursday morning, despite police saying the system was working.

During the plea hearing, Leifer leaned forward across the table and buried her face in her hands on the table in front of her. She appeared to be wearing the same clothing and headdress as she was when she was seen leaving Israel on Monday, a Jewish religious habit to keep her modest. The 74 child sexual abuse claims she is accused of during her tenure as head of the Adass Israel ultra-Orthodox Jewish girls’ school in Melbourne were linked to three female plaintiffs, a court has heard.

The 74 counts, including 11 counts of rape, 47 counts of indecent assault, 13 counts of indecent behavior with a child and three counts of sexual penetration of a child, are outlined in court documents. Most of these took place in Elsternwick, a Melbourne suburb that is home to the Adass Israel School and the Adass community.

The names of the victims and some details of the accusation have been redacted. Additionally, there are reports of alleged crimes believed to have involved school camps that allegedly took place in Rawson, Blampied, and Emerald.

In one case, Leifer was accused of raping the victim by “forcing (the victim) to sexually penetrate Malka Leifer without her consent,” while Leifer knew the victim “did not or might not consent.” According to another indictment, Leifer intentionally sexually penetrated the victim “without her consent … knowing that she did not or may not consent,” committing rape.

The first charge dates back to January 1, 2004, and the others are said to have lasted until March 2008. According to a police report, Leifer “fled Australia” on March 6, 2008. The charges were filed in March 2012.

The hearing was televised and watched by Dassi Erlich, Elly Saper and Nicole Meyer, the three sisters who accused Leifer of abusing them when they were his students. Leifer has consistently insisted that the accusations against her are false.

Tony Hargreaves, Leifer’s lawyer, said Victoria Police had given his client “several different types of medication” for “significant mental problems” before his extradition. He also mentioned that she has “very strict religious beliefs” that should be upheld while she is in custody.

Because “there are simply no facilities available” in police custody that would allow Leifer to practice her faith, Hargreaves requested that she be transferred from police custody to prison.

Aaron Strasser, principal of Adass Israel School, made the announcement Wednesday. He also issued a warning to the community, noting the extensive media attention the case has generated. The school would host an advisory evening for current and former students, parents, and staff.

“We understand that Ms Leifer’s presence in Australia may cause a range of reactions from our school community, including our staff, students and parental bodies,” he added.

We want to assure you that Adass Israel School fully supports the current legal process and will comply with all requests from the relevant authorities to help resolve this issue, according to Strasser.
