Anthony Snook, 44, has now been charged with murder and will appear in court today over the teenager’s death.
Avon and Somerset Police said eight people have been arrested since Mason and Max were found dead.
It is about two boys aged 15 and 16 and a 46-year-old woman.
A heartbreaking vigil was held for friends yesterday.
Max’s mum Leanne told mourners: “It’s not just me and my three beautiful girls suffering, the whole community, the whole family is suffering.
“I lost my boy and I’ll never see that child again. I don’t want anyone else to go through what I’m going through, and what Mason’s mom is going through.”
“Please check children’s bags, children’s phones,” she added.
Detective Superintendent Gary Haskins, head of MCIT, said last night: “This is a pivotal moment in our investigation and Mason and Max’s family have been informed of this development.
“Specialist family liaison officers are supporting them and we continue to ask that their privacy be respected and that they be given space to grieve.
“A total of eight people were arrested as part of our investigation, and five of them, apart from Anthony Snook, are still in police custody.
“Our investigation continues apace with more than 100 officers and staff working around the clock to bring those responsible for Mason and Max’s deaths to justice.
“We will continue to provide updates on developments when we can.
“In the meantime, we want to remind people of the impact that speculation, footage and images on social media could have on Mason and Max’s family, as well as the upcoming proceedings.”
Talented soccer player Max and sidekick Mason were attacked on Saturday night by a group that fled the scene of the accident in a car.
Tributes have poured in for a couple who died in the early hours of Sunday morning.
Max’s sister, Kayleigh, paid tribute to her brother on Facebook with a touching photo.
She wrote: “Sleep in peace. A beautiful, kind soul gone. I’ve just spent 16 years, so young and innocent, oh my heart is broken.
“I really hope you know how much we love you. How much I love you.
“I’ll miss you kid, I’ll always look out for you in every sunset, shine bro.”
While his grieving mum Leanne wrote: “Devastated, our lives will never be the same without you my boy.”
