Man Banned From United Airlines After Reportedly Urinating on Fellow Business Class Passenger

A man was banned from United Airlines after allegedly urinating on another passenger.

Nicole Cornell told SFGate via email that her stepfather, Jerome Gutierrez, was flying business class on a United flight from San Francisco International Airport to Manila, Philippines on Dec. 27 when the incident occurred.

According to Cornell, a passenger got up from his seat on UA ​​Flight 189, approached Gutierrez and began urinating on him about four hours into the flight while he was resting.

Gutierrez “was asleep and buttoned up, and was surprised when he [saw] man and thought he was dreaming,” Cornell said in an email to the dealership. However, it took her stepfather a few moments before he finally realized what was happening.

PEOPLE was unable to reach Cornell for comment.

“Jerome realized that his stomach was soaked in that man’s urine,” she explained.

After the incident, Cornell noted that flight attendants gave her stepfather “pajamas to wear” but allegedly warned Gutierrez “not to approach the man for fear of a confrontation and him becoming violent.”

A United Airlines spokesperson told PEOPLE in a statement that the crew “asked the police to meet our flight when it arrived in Manila” on Dec. 28 to “deal with the passenger disturbance,” but they would not. address the details — or cause — of the incident.

The spokesperson also said in the company’s response that it has “banned the disruptive passenger” from all future United flights.

In her email to SFGate, Cornell said she was “appalled” by the way the flight crew responded and said she believed different steps should have been taken on the approximately 15-hour flight.

“They are putting the needs of the airline ahead of my stepfather’s health,” Cornell wrote. “I am so appalled and shocked at how United Airlines handled this! It is a biohazard and the plane should have turned around to solve this problem.”

Cornell said the man who urinated on her stepfather eventually apologized to her parents and “begged them not to press charges.”
