Manisha Ramdass is an Indian SU5 para-badminton player (in SU5, the player has an upper limb injury). She is the first Indian female athlete to win the Para-Badminton Player of the Year Award 2022. She made her international debut in March 2022 and won two gold medals. Her impeccable performance in all competitions has secured her the No. 1 position in the world; as of May 2023, she is No. 1 in women’s singles, with Mandeep Kaur Finished second in women’s doubles together and ninth in mixed category with Pramod Bhagat.

Manisha Ramdass was born on Thursday 27 January 2005 in Thiruvallur, Chennai, Tamil Nadu (18 until 2023). In 2023, she pursued her commerce higher education from Shree Niketan Matriculation High School, Thiruvallur, Tamil Nadu. She received her badminton training under the guidance of S. Ramkumar at Apu Indoor Sports Academy in Thiruurur, Tamil Nadu.

Manisha Ramdass made her international debut at the Spanish Para-Badminton International in March 2022 and competed in the Women’s Singles (WS), Women’s Doubles (WD) and Mixed (XD) categories won two gold medals and one bronze medal. She defeated Portugal’s Beatriz Monteiro in the singles. In doubles, she was partnered with Mandeep Kaur and together they beat India’s Manasi Joshi and Shanthya Vishwanathan.

After making her international debut in March 2022, she has performed steadily at events including Brazil Para Badminton International (April 2022), Bahrain International Para Badminton (May 2022), Fazza Dubai International Para Badminton Badminton (May 2022) and Spanish Para Badminton – International Badminton (February 2023).

In November 2022, she participated in the BWF Para Badminton World Championships held in Tokyo in Hulik, where she won the WS SU5 (Women’s Singles) gold medal and won the Bronze medal in WD (Women’s Doubles) category.

Her continued performance improved her world ranking and became the number one player in the women’s SU5 category for 2022. In an interview, she discussed her ranking and Player of the Year award, saying:
It is an honor to be selected ahead of so many senior players. I am extremely proud and happy to receive this award in front of so many legendary players.this [BWF honour] This is my biggest achievement so far and it will inspire me to achieve even more in the future. I want to win a medal at the Asian Paralympics and the 2024 Paralympics in Paris. “

Facts / Trivia
- Manisha was born a forceps baby (an assisted delivery method that helps mothers deliver vaginally if labor is not going well). It was the impact of this congenital injury that caused her right hand to be handicapped. She has undergone three surgeries and her hand is still only 60% recovered.
- There are marks on her face. These were caused by the birth trauma she suffered during birth.
- Initially, Manisha played in the able-bodied group. For four years she competed in able-bodied badminton championships at the state and regional levels but failed to qualify for the national level.
- Tamil Nadu CM, MK Stalin honored her for becoming the first Indian woman to win the Player of the Year award in 2022.
