Accused of wrongfully claiming cash reward from Haryana Sports Department
In 2016, the Haryana Sports Department ordered a vigilance inquiry against kabaddi players Manjeet Chillar and Rakesh Kumar after the duo allegedly posed as residents of Haryana status received a cash incentive of Rs 2 crore from the state. On August 11, 2015, Manjeet and Rakesh claimed the cash prize at a function in Panchkula after submitting an application to the Jhajjar district sports officer, claiming that they were residents of Haryana. According to Minister of State for Sports and Youth Affairs Anil Vij, an investigation found that the players did not have the necessary documents to substantiate their claims and did not attend further meetings of the inquiry committee. While Vij claimed that “Manjeet could not prove that he had been in Haryana for 15 years”, Manjeet pleaded not guilty, saying:
All my identity documents are from my village Jatwala near Baturgarh, which we applied for last year through the district sports officer of Jhajar district. From 2005 to 2008, I even participated in the Haryana Intercollegiate Championships. My father Jai Prakash passed away four months before retiring from the Haryana Police in 2012 and I was offered a job by the then Haryana government. But we did not get NOC from Railways at that time. Many Indian players belonging to their respective states have to play in games provided by their employers. “
