Manjula Subramaniam (1948-2023) was an Indian Administrative Service officer of the Gujarat cadre in 1972. She is famous for becoming the first woman chief secretary of Gujarat. She died on January 1, 2023, in a hospital in Vadodara, Gujarat due to health-related issues.

After undergoing IAS training, Manjula was posted as Assistant Collector (Junior), Surat from August 1, 1974 to June 1, 1976. She then served as Deputy Secretary Assistant Collector in the Land Revenue Management and District Administration Department for about six months. On January 1, 1977, Manjula was appointed as Jamnagar District Development Officer. Subramaniam served as Amreli District Collector from January 1, 1978 to April 1, 1980. She then served as District Collector of Junagadh for about two years. On May 1, 1982, Manjula was appointed Deputy Minister of Industry and Mines. On April 1, 1984, Manjula attended the central delegation and was appointed deputy minister of the Ministry of Personnel and Administrative Reform. She was appointed as Joint Chief Director, Commercial Industries (Import and Export) on June 1, 1986. Manujula then served as commercial industry director for about eight months. On June 1, 1989, Manjula became a member of the Ministry of Energy and Petrochemicals and the Gujarat State Electricity Board. She served there until May 1, 1993. Thereafter, she worked in the Central Delegation for about 5 years as Joint Secretary to the Government of India. On June 3, 1998, Manjula was appointed as Principal Secretary, Ministry of Urban Development and Urban Housing. She also served as Principal Secretary, Department of Energy and Petrochemicals and Deputy Chief Secretary, Department of Finance. As Chief Minister of the Ministry of Energy and Petrochemicals, she participated in the “Jyoti Gram Yojana” initiative launched by the Government of Gujarat, India, to ensure 24-hour three-phase high-quality power supply in rural areas of the state. On August 31, 2007, she was appointed Chief Secretary of Gujarat; during this period, Prime Minister Narendra Modi served as Chief Minister of Gujarat. Manjula retired on November 30, 2008. After his retirement, Manjula was appointed Chief Vigilance Commissioner of Gujarat. She is also a member of the Sabarmati Riverfront Development Corporation. She also served as chairperson and director of many state public sector units. In June 2017, she was appointed as the interim head of the Real Estate Regulatory Authority (RERA), Gujarat.

In August 2020, Subramaniam was appointed as an additional director on the board of directors of Gujarat Natural Gas Corporation Limited (GIPCL) for a period of five years. She resigned from the position in December 2022 due to health reasons.

Manjula Subramaniam died on January 1, 2023, in a hospital in Vadodara, Gujarat due to health complications. She faced health issues for some time and was admitted to hospital a week before her death. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel took to social media to express their condolences over her death. Prime Minister Modi said in a tweet,
