Manmohan Krishna was born on Sunday 26 February 1922 in Valsad (now Bombay), Bombay, British India, at the age of 68. He is a Pisces. After his education at Bloomfield Hall School, he graduated from Allahabad University. Manmohan obtained a master’s degree in physics and started his career as a professor of physics at Rajakiya Vidyalaya, Lahore. During this time, he had a strong desire to pursue a broadcasting career and traveled to Mumbai for interviews. Interestingly, he met famous film producer V Shantaram by chance at a party, which eventually opened the doors of the film industry for him.

He acted in nearly 250 films, including famous Hindi films such as Naya Daur (1957), Sadhana (1958), Khandan (1965), Waqt (1965) and Hamraaz (1967). He received critical acclaim for his performance in Bees Saal Baad (1962) and won the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Abdul Rashid in Dhool Ka Phool (1960) prize.

In addition, he acted in 12 Punjabi films, playing an important role in KA Abbas’s Shehar Aur Sapna (1963), which won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film and was the first Indo-Soviet co-production Starring in “Pardesi” (1957). Nominated for the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 1958. Manmohan is a favorite actor of the Chopra Brothers, appearing in several films they directed or produced. Some of these films include Naya Daur (1957), Sadhna (1958), Dhool Ka Phool (1959), Kanoon (1960), Waqt (1965), Hamraaz (1967), Daag (1973), Joshila (1973), Deewar ( 1975 1978), Trisur (1978) and Kala Patar (1979). Towards the end of his career, he directed the successful Noorie (1979) for Yash Raj Films. The project also earned him a Filmfare Award nomination for Best Director.

After debuting in the film industry, he also showed off his singing skills with the song “Tujhe Aap Bitana Hai Apna Jeevan” in the same film. This provided him with opportunities as a singer, allowing him to collaborate with music composers like Vasant Desai to create iconic tracks such as “Aao Azadi Ke Geet Gaye Chale” (Jeevan Yatra, 1946) and “Bhai Savdhan” (Matwala Shair Ramjoshi , 1947)). He even contributed to the title track of “Apna Desh” (1949), and the song in “Afsar” (1950) was also a hit. In his national award-winning film “Shehar Aur Sapna” (1963), he sang the theme song “Yeh Shaam Bhi Kahaan Hai”.

- Not many people know that Manmohan Krishna’s debut song “Jhat Khol De” appeared in Dev Anand’s film Afsar in 1950 and was composed by SD Burman.
- The song “Tu Hindu Banega na Musalman banega, insaan ki aulaad hai, insaan banega” epitomizes Nehruvian secularism and featured him in the film “Dhool Ka Phool”.
- Manmohan Krishna is often mistaken for actor Manmohan, known for playing villains, as they share the same name.
- He also hosted the singing competition “Cadbury’s Phulwari” on the radio.
- Manmohan’s son, Dr Ramchada, is a renowned spine surgeon practicing at the Lilawati Hospital in Mumbai.
- One of his most famous songs is “Basti Basti Parvat Parvat” from the film Railway Platform (1955). Although the song was originally recorded with his voice, the version sung by Mohammad Rafi was eventually used in the film.
