When her father, Manuel Gehring, was found a week later in California, he confessed to killing 14-year-old Sarah and 11-year-old Philip in their truck before they drove west with their bodies strapped in seatbelts.
After her ex kidnapped her children on July 4, the mother is in mourning.
In February 2004, while awaiting trial, Gehring committed suicide in prison. Along I-80 in northwest Ohio, the bodies of the children were found in December 2005.
Gehring and his ex-wife, who had remarried and were expecting twins when their children disappeared, had been fighting a custody battle. The gap between their kidnapping and the discovery of their bodies was, according to Teresa “Tera” Knight, “incredibly surreal.”
He recalled several difficult moments in which media attention waned and he believed that no one was looking for them anymore.
Her twin girls, now 9½ years old, help her forget about Sarah and Philip’s death. She assured that her own stubbornness prevents her from returning to “that world”, where there is no normality but only extreme feelings.

Less than five months after the second marriage, which took place three weeks before Sarah and Philip disappeared, she gave birth to Molly and Mallory.
The twins launch balloons into the sky on their birthdays and call Sarah and Philip their “guardian angels”. Knight’s two daughters, who cheer as Sarah, “wonder and wish for what could have been,” she says.
The fact that Gehring “got away with it” by committing suicide still angers her. However, she said she was relieved that there was no danger that the trial would go wrong and he would get away with it.
“That would be worse,” he commented. She is pursuing her second master’s degree while teaching nursing at Concord Community College.
She always goes out of town this time of year with her husband Jim and the girls, and this year is no exception. They set up her tent on a Maine beach. She claims that on July 4th ten years ago, as she and Jim were driving back from Maine, they were faced with the startling reality of missing children and a sense of dread at the thought of never seeing them again.
