Marcelo Williams News

We entered the execution room at 9:34 p.m. I entered through a door with the initials “EC” written in large letters and sat down among several rows of chairs in front of four large rectangular windows. There were lights on, but they were mostly dim. The windows in front of us had a black curtain drawn across the bottom. Marcel Williams was hidden behind a curtain, lying on a stretcher in a much smaller space.

We are not allowed to witness the installation of a lethal IV injection in Arkansas. I didn’t see a thing from the moment we arrived until the curtains came down. We just expected Williams (46) to climb out of those windows because he was sentenced to death for the 1994 rape and murder of 22-year-old Stacy Errickson, whom he kidnapped from a gas station.

When a last-minute stay left us waiting in the chamber for over an hour before nightfall, we’ve done it. We later found out that Williams was wheelchair bound during that time. With the restraint removed then, as now, I did little more than stare at the black curtain, knowing very little of what was happening to the prisoner.

In the area ahead, the fluorescent lighting cast an unusual yellow hue. Marcel Williams fixed his gaze on the ceiling. He too was bound to a wheelchair. The right side of his body was facing us, the viewers, and his head was fixed on his spot. He made no further comment.

The controversial sedative midazolam, whose expiration date at the end of this month sparked a historic wave of judicial executions in Arkansas, was scheduled to be administered at the time. The use of the drug has not been published.

His eyes started to close, but the right one stayed open for a while. Her breathing became heavier and deeper. When she took a breath, her back arched from the cart.

His body rose from the car several times with such movements that I lost count. After applying midazolam, one should not move for five minutes. Williams was still breathing hard and moving at 10:21 p.m. The man in the room touched her eyes, felt her pulse, and then spoke. (Sound cuts out for us.)

At 10:21 p.m., it was apparently time to check Williams’s consciousness for the first time. Afterward, his breathing seemed to improve, but the situation turned cloudy as the officer continued to examine Williams by touching his arms and face. The employee punctured Williams’ eyelids once more at 10:27 pm These investigations are crucial because the subsequent medication was a paralytic, stopping all movement.

I’m not sure when another medication was given that completely numbed the pain. I missed the IV inserted. Even as a witness, I was unable to determine if Marcel Williams was in pain or what happened during his death using the three-drug midazolam protocol because the audio cut out and I couldn’t see how many times each drug was administered.
