Marilu Henner looks back on her time Dancing with the stars.
The 72-year-old actress — who appeared on season 23 of ABC’s hit dance competition in 2016 — recalled Cheryl Burke’s final episode Sex, lies and spray tanning podcast that she struggled with her dance partner Derek Hough’s teaching style.
“Derek kept changing things,” she recalled. “So I’d take a step and he’d say, what’s that? And I’m going, that’s a step from Tuesday, the first day we work on it. It was all in my head.”
Henner, who in 2013 spoke of a vastly superior autobiographical memory, added: “It’s like the only time I thought maybe my memory was a bit of a curse because I know if you keep changing things, they got in there the first way so I have to take the time to get them out .”

She later explained on the podcast how Hough’s frequent changes made learning the choreography a challenge.
“It had a lot more to do with the way he teaches someone to dance and someone like me who is used to a different method and really wants to get it into their body with repetition and muscle memory because then I can add all my stuff,” she explained.
PEOPLE has reached out to Hough’s rep for comment.
When asked if she ever doubted whether she would be able to walk down the stairs, she replied: “Every day, every time was different. Every dance was different.”

Henner — who played Elaine O’Connor Nardo on Taxiwhich ran for five seasons from 1978 to 1983 – also recalled Hough, 39, not enjoying choreographing dances to music from her series. “He didn’t like it Taxi music, and I love that music, and he hated that music,” she said.
“He had a hard time getting inspired by it,” Burke, 40, said, with Henner adding, “He complained about it and didn’t like it.”
Despite their differences, Henner made it through most of the competition and was eliminated a week before the semi-finals during season 23.

When asked what she learned about herself from the experience, Henner said, “I can continue to trust myself about certain things because in the long run it’s very clear that with all the experience and memory I have, there are certain things that work and certain things that don’t.” .”
“I can get an A or I can get a B. You know what I mean? And since I’m a little Catholic schoolgirl, a student, I always want to aim for that five,” she added.
