As part of a challenge to her reelection by voters and a supporting legal group, who are seeking to remove her from the ballot for her role prior to the riot, controversial Republican U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia testified under oath on Friday and defended her remarks prior to the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol.
Even though a Democratic-led committee in Washington, D.C. has been looking into the attack for months, Greene became the first Republican member of Congress to testify publicly on Jan. 6 with her appearance in an Atlanta court on Friday.
A few residents of Greene’s district, represented by the nonprofit Free Speech For People, claimed that Greene ought to be disqualified since she allegedly encouraged and supported the rioters who stormed the Capitol. This led to Greene appearing before an administrative law court.
On the witness stand, the congresswoman repeated unfounded allegations of election fraud and insisted time and again that her tense pre-Jan. 6 language was about contesting the electoral tally, not inciting violence.
To an inquiry, Greene replied, “I don’t endorse violence of any type. “My words never, ever, ever mean anything for violence.”
There were several of Greene’s fans in the courtroom, and they applauded when she entered. Free Speech For People’s legal team is relying on a clause in the U.S. Constitution that prohibits any member of Congress who participated in an uprising from holding public office. The 14th Amendment’s provision prohibiting former Confederates from holding congressional seats was passed in the years following the Civil War.
Greene has a history of using abusive language to criticise her political rivals, and she frequently spreads untrue information regarding the 2020 election, particularly in the months before the election on Jan. 6, 2021.
