One of Mark Twain’s final requests is finally being fulfilled exactly a century after it was discovered his death reports were totally true: his long, outspoken autobiography, which he spent the last ten years of his life writing, will be published.
In addition to 5,000 unedited pages of memoirs, the author of Tom Sawyer, Huckleberry Finn, and some of the most commonly misused catchphrases in the English language also left behind handwritten notes stating that he did not want his works to be published for at least a century when he passed away in 1910.
The first book of Mark Twain’s autobiography will be published at the University of California, Berkeley in November after reaching that milestone and the manuscript being stored in a vault. The final trilogy will be 50,000 pages long and provide fresh insight into the uniquely American novelist. Why Twain wanted the first-person account of his life kept secret for such a long time has divided scholars. Some people think it was because he wanted to discuss topics like politics and religion openly. Others contend that the delay spared him from worrying about upsetting his pals.
One thing is certain: by postponing publication, the author, who enjoyed being a celebrity, has made sure that he will be the subject of rumours throughout the book’s release period.
His little-known but scandalous relationship with Isabel Van Kleek Lyon, his secretary following the passing of his wife Olivia in 1904, will be covered in depth in a portion of his memoir. Lyon and Twain were so close that Twain once gave Lyon an electric vibrating sex toy. However, the author claimed she “hypnotised” him into handing her power of attorney over his inheritance, leading to her unexpected dismissal in 1909.
The 400-page appendix, which Twain penned in the final year of his life, has a complete account of their tragic relationship. It gives a stunning description of how the novelist’s emotional turmoil dominated his final months as he was dying.
The general consensus is that Mark Twain was a kind of polite Victorian. He refers to her as a slut and claims that she tried to seduce him in this paper. The historian Laura Trombley, who last year published a book about Lyon titled Mark Twain’s Other Woman, claims that it is utterly at odds with the perception that most people have of him.
“There is a misconception that Twain basked in the admiration of his audience during his latter years. Perhaps the autobiography will reveal that the period wasn’t all that joyful. He wrote a manuscript full of hate over the final six months of his life, saying things about people he had never expressed in paper before. There are 400 pages of pure garbage.
