Despite the testimonies of the witnesses, he was cleared of the crime in 1991. The witness who informed the law enforcement of her involvement in the crime and claimed that Mel killed Brenda was Mary Ann Shore. She was responsible for both assisting Mel and advancing the case thanks to her admission.

Who was Mary Ann Shore?

Mel Ignatow and Mary Ann Shore-Inlow began dating when she was in her twenties and he was in his thirtys. Mel’s marriage to his wife had ended by that time. She was his secretary and frequently around his kids. When Mel went on business travels, she would spend a few days with them. They ended their long-term relationship after years of on-and-off dating. It was revealed on the broadcast that Mary had reported Mel for tax evasion.

Mel brought up Mary when being questioned before a federal grand jury, which drew the attention of the detectives looking into Brenda’s disappearance. In September 1988, Mel was the last person who saw Brenda alive. Mary was asked to testify as well, and while she was speaking, she was found to be lying. When asked how Brenda looked, Mary said, “You mean the last time I saw her?” Mary testified that she had only ever met Brenda once. Mary immediately exited the courtroom as the prosecution destroyed her testimony.

She admitted to aiding Mel in torturing Brenda when the police pressed her for more details. She claimed that it was planned and that she had spent hours taking pictures of Mel torturing and raping Brenda. According to other versions, Mary participated in the sexual assault as well. She then assisted Mel in burying Brenda in a hole they had previously dug behind the home she had previously occupied. She consented to assist the authorities in return for merely being charged with tampering with evidence.

Mary met Mel in the parking lot of an ice cream shop in Louisville, Kentucky, in January 1990 while she was wearing a wire. Mel advised her during that call not to be concerned about the FBI looking into the issue, saying, “They can’t force you to talk… They got nothing!” Brenda’s body was found in the woods, where the police buried her, thanks to Mary.

Mary was the key witness in Mel’s subsequent trial for Brenda’s murder. But in 1991, Mel was exonerated of the murder charge in spite of the testimony and the recorded discussion. The images Mary mentioned first appeared only a few months later. Brenda’s murderer, Mel, confessed, but a second trial was barred due to double jeopardy.
