In 2004, Kelly introduced an intelligence beat on NPR. She decided to try switching from spy pacing to spy fiction after a particularly difficult trip to Baghdad, which was so difficult that she published an essay about it in Newsweek. Simon & Schuster published Anonymous Sources, her first spy book, in 2013.
