Maryland Judge Shot Dead on Driveway of His Home, Say Police: ‘Horrible News’

A Maryland judge is dead after a shooting in his driveway, according to police.

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release that deputies responded to a report of a shooting on Olde Waterford Road, Hagerstown around 8:00 p.m. Thursday.

The victim — identified as 52-year-old Maryland District Court Judge Andrew Wilkinson — was “suffering from what appeared to be gunshot wounds” in his driveway, according to the post. He was taken to Meritus Medical Center, where he later died.

“This remains an active investigation; due to the ongoing investigation, certain details will not be released,” the sheriff’s office said.

Authorities plan to hold a press conference to reveal “specific information,” which will be posted on the website and social media, the statement said.

As a precaution, state troopers were assigned overnight to guard judges who live in Washington County, police spokeswoman Elena Russo said. The The Washington Post.

According to the district court website, Wilkinson studied economics at the University of North Carolina before attending Emory University School of Law in 1997. He was a lawyer at Barton & Williams and Divelbiss & Wilkinson, and opened his law firm in 2018 while serving on the board of directors of several associations.

After being sworn in as a circuit court judge in 2020, Wilkinson said Herald-Mail I was “honored and humbled,” adding, “I am happy to serve.”
