DONALD Sutherland, equally known for his unusual and dramatic roles during a six-decade Hollywood career, has died aged 88.
Sutherland, who became known for his roles in The Dirty Dozen, M*A*S*Hu and most recently as President Snow in the Hunger Games series, died on Thursday.

The cult actor died in Miami, Florida from an unspecified long illness, writes The Hollywood Reporter.
Sutherland was the father of five children, including Emmy-winning actor Kiefer, CAA Media Finance veteran Roeg, actors Angus and Rossif, and daughter Rachel.
Kiefer, 57, mourned his father’s death and remembered him as “one of the most important actors” of all time.
“It is with a heavy heart that I tell you that my father, Donald Sutherland, has passed away,” Kiefer wrote on X, formerly Twitter.
“Personally, I think he is one of the most important actors in the history of cinema. He was never intimidated by a role, good, bad or ugly.
“He loved what he did and did what he loved, and you can never ask for more than that. A life well lived.”

Born on July 17, 1935, Sutherland rose to fame in 1967 in the wartime film classic The Dirty Dozen.
The Canadian-born actor has enjoyed a long career starring in Hollywood blockbusters and a string of TV shows.
Sutherland was one of the most recognizable faces in Hollywood, appearing in more than 140 films.
An Emmy and Golden Globe winner, Sutherland’s acting versatility was well-known in the business, landing roles as a romantic lead, villain, anti-hero or mentor figure.

- Kiefer Sutherland was born on December 21, 1966 in the London district of Paddington.
- His parents, Donald Sutherland and Shirley Douglas, were successful Canadian actors.
- Like his parents, Kiefer has achieved great success in the film industry, including an Emmy Award, a Golden Globe Award, and two Screen Actors Guild Awards.
- Kiefer’s rise in Hollywood began in 1983 when he made his screen debut alongside his father in the comedy-drama Max Dugan Returns.
- He moved to the United States, primarily to Hollywood, after his success in the role of Donald Campbell in the 1984 film The Bad Boy.
- During the 1990s, Kiefer appeared in more than a dozen covers and starred alongside such homegrown actors as Julia Roberts, Kevin Bacon, Dennis Hopper, Ray Liotta, Jack Nicholson, Jeff Bridges, Reese Witherspoon and Sally Field, among others.

When asked by Newsday which of his films he found most satisfying, Sutherland said working for a “master” like director Federico Fellini in Casanova was like no other.
“Working for Fellini was the best experience of my life,” he said at the time.
“For an actor, there is no one like him. More than anyone else in the world, you defer to Fellini.

Despite his work in critically acclaimed films, Sutherland was never nominated for an Oscar.
He received an honorary Academy Award in 2017.
Sutherland married three times during his life.
He married Lois Hardwick in 1959 before they divorced in 1996.
In the same year, he married Canadian actress Shirley Douglas, with whom he had twins Kiefer and Rachel.
The couple’s marriage lasted only four years before they divorced in 1970.
By 1972, Sutherland had married actress Francine Racette for the third time.
Sutherland and Racette had three children together: Rossif, Angus and Roeg.
