Mason Greenwood signs with Getafe as Spaniards seal loan move for Man Utd outcast minutes before transfer window closes

MASON Greenwood has signed for the Spanish side on loan just minutes before the transfer window closed.

The striker (21) has not played since January 2022 after he was arrested on suspicion of attempted rape, assault and forcible control.

All charges were dropped this February, but the Old Trafford outfit said Greenwood would leave the club last week.

And now La Liga club Getafe have completed a season-long loan deal for Greenwood at the last minute, subject to international clearance.

The Spanish club visit Real Madrid tomorrow afternoon, although it is unlikely that they will be registered in time.

Greenwood is likely to make his Getafe debut on September 17 against Osasuna.

United will reportedly not receive a loan fee for Greenwood and are reportedly covering most of his wages.

The Madrid-based side will also cover a small contribution towards his salary during the loan.

A statement from the United club read: “This move allows Greenwood to begin rebuilding his career outside of Manchester United.

“The club will continue to support Mason and his family during this transition period.”

Getafe plays in the Coliseum Alfonso Pérez with a capacity of 17,393 and is currently twelfth in the league standings.

Boss John Murtough has taken charge of talks over a move to Getafe, according to MailOnline.

Greenwood was reportedly due to be welcomed back into the fold before SunSport exclusively reported that United had made the U-turn due to a volatile reaction.

Other English clubs are said to be similarly fearful of a public backlash if they allow Greenwood to return to the field.

The transfer deadline for English clubs expired at 11 p.m., and initial inquiries from the domestic teams did not respond.

Failure to pay Greenwood’s £75,000-a-week salary would leave United facing a bill of up to £8m.

This is because he still has two years left on his contract, with the club having the option to extend it for an additional 12 months.

Instead, Greenwood had no choice but to move to a foreign club.

It was reported this morning that Greenwood had been thrown a final lifeline by Europe’s top club Lazio – but the Italian deadline expired at 7pm.

There were no inquiries from Saudi Arabia, where teams have already brought in Cristiano Ronaldo, Neymar and Karim Benzema this season.

The deadline in Saudi Arabia expires on September 7.
